Death Angel is often referred to as one of the key bands in the Bay Area thrash metal movement of the 1980s, and secured opening slots at club venues that decade, including opening for their peers Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Overkill, D.R.I., Mercyful Fate and Possessed. They are also often credited as one of the leaders of the second wave of thrash metal movement from the 1980s, and considered to be one of the "big eight" of the genre (along with Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Anthrax, Testament, Exodus and Overkill), as well as one of the so-called "Big Six of Bay Area thrash metal" (alongside Exodus, Testament, Lååz Rockit, Forbidden and Vio-lence). Following the underground success of their first two studio albums, The Ultra-Violence (1987) and Frolic Through the Park (1988), Death Angel signed to Geffen Records in 1989, and released their only album for the label, Act III, the following year. While they were touring in support of Act III, then-drummer Andy Galeon was injured in a tour bus accident and needed more than a year to fully recover. This resulted in the band's break up in 1991. However, Death Angel reformed in 2001 (without original rhythm guitarist Gus Pepa) at the Thrash of the Titans benefit concert for Testament singer Chuck Billy. The band has since released six more albums, including Humanicide (2019), to which the title track gave Death Angel their first-ever Grammy Award nomination.

Death Angel Lyrics

Drain the poison, kill the lie
Life is now, there is no end
Never know what might have been
[Chorus]
Spirit never fade away
I can never forget that day
Beyond the grave
Spirit never fade
Never fade away
Spirit never fade
Things that you fear the most
Same damn things you hold so close
Try hard as steel till nothing's left
It'll come when you least expect
[Chorus]
Beyond the grave
Spirit never fade
Never fade away
Spirit never fade
In your mind suspended in time
Different lives, different times
Worlds collide, memory blinds
Peace is hard to find
Spirit or ghost
Have I lost my mind?
Hope is alive
Carry us through time
Dream awake, eyes open wide
Drain the poison, kill the lie
Life is now, there is no end
Never know what might have been
[Chorus]
Beyond the grave
Spirit never fade
Spirit never fade
Never fade away
Spirit never fade
Never fade away
The song "Spirit" by Death Angel is a powerful and thought-provoking reflection on life, and how our choices and fears can impact us long after we're gone. The lyrics urge the listener to wake up from their dreamlike state, and to face the truth head-on. The opening lines, "Dream awake, eyes open wide/Drain the poison, kill the lie," emphasize the importance of being present in the moment and rejecting the falsehoods that we may encounter in our lives.
The chorus, "Spirit never fade away/I can never forget that day," emphasizes that even after death, our spirit lives on. It's a reminder that we should strive to live lives that are meaningful and impactful, as our legacy will continue long after we're gone.
The second verse is particularly striking, with its commentary on fear and attachment: "Things that you fear the most/Same damn things you hold so close/Try hard as steel till nothing's left/It'll come when you least expect." The lines reflect on the irony that we often cling to the things that scare us the most, and that these very things can consume us if we're not careful.
Overall, the song is a powerful meditation on life, death, and legacy, and urges the listener to live fearlessly and with purpose.
