Stella

Though the houses and the trees still stand
The flowers folded, the colors all changed
When Stella let go of my hand
When the sky looked a little bluer
And I saw heaven smile
Still I cry because I knew her just a little while
Stella, you were an angel in my life
And I swear sometimes I see her there
She calls me in to put down a few
And we talk until the moon would bend
When the sky looked a little bluer
And I saw heaven smile
Still I cry because I knew her just a little while
Stella, you were an angel in my life
Young woman, old girl
Fifty years means nothin' in this world
For the balance of things gotta have the nest and the wings
She said I was a really old soul
But somehow I revived her youth
Now I hear her laugh everywhere I go
Though her body hushed at 82
When the sky looked a little bluer
And I saw heaven smile
Still I cry because I knew her just a little while
Stella, you were an angel in my life
The song "Stella" by Debra Davis is a tribute to a woman who had a profound impact on the singer's life. It begins by describing how the physical surroundings of the singer have remained the same but everything has changed since Stella let go of his hand. The flowers have folded and the colors have all changed because Stella was the one who filled their world with light and color.
The second verse speaks to the enduring presence of Stella in the singer's life. Even though she has passed away, the light is still on in the corner room and sometimes he sees her there. They talk until the moon would bend, suggesting that their conversations lasted long into the night. The chorus repeats the sentiment that Stella was an angel in the singer's life, and he still cries because although he knew her, it was only for a little while.
The final verse adds more depth to Stella's character. She was a young woman and an old girl, and she believed that fifty years meant nothing in this world. She recognized the importance of both having a nest and having wings, and the singer suspects that he was her kindred spirit because she called him a really old soul. Although Stella was 82 when she passed away, the singer still hears her laugh everywhere he goes, confirming that her spirit lives on.
