Elevator Hum
Declan Mckenna Lyrics

This hole in my brain, that's come around again
The West Hampstead Reds
Send me to bed and head off out again
Some things have to change
Some things are to blame
For almost everything
Some boys grow in shame
Don't play that game
'Cause I want you to believe
You're just like me
I want you to believe
You're just like me
I want you to be free
To be happy
I want you to believe (I want you, I want you to)
You're just like me (I want you to)
Just another California tongue
Prove me wrong
But I think they all sound the same
It doesn't matter where you're from
Talking that way, now
Listen to the elevator hum
The mechanism is breaking down again
Don't you tell my mum
No, don't play that game
'Cause I want you to believe
You're just like me
I want you to believe
You're just like me
I want you to be free
To be happy
I want you to believe
You're just like me
(I want you to, I want you)
(I want you to, I want you)
(I want you to, I want you)
(I want you to)
'Cause I want you to believe
You're just like me (I want you to, I want you to)
I want you to believe (I want you to, I want you to)
You're just like me
I want you to be free (I want you to, I want you to)
To be happy (I want you to, I want you to)
I want you to believe (I want you to, I want you to)
You're just like me
In "Elevator Hum," Declan Mckenna explores themes of self-identity, societal pressure, and the desire for acceptance. The song opens with the line, "I can't quite explain this hole in my brain, that's come around again." This suggests a feeling of emptiness or confusion within the singer's mind. They may be struggling with their own thoughts and emotions, which have resurfaced. The reference to the "West Hampstead Reds" could symbolize a group or clique that the singer is part of, but doesn't fully resonate with. They go to bed alone while their friends go out, highlighting a sense of detachment.
The chorus showcases the singer's yearning for others to understand them. The repetition of "I want you to believe/You're just like me" emphasizes their desire for connection. They want others to see themselves in the singer, emphasizing that they are not alone in their struggles. The line "Some boys grow in shame" suggests that the singer feels a sense of shame or inadequacy around their identity and wants to break free from it.
The second verse introduces the idea of judgment based on language or accent. The singer talks about a "California tongue" and how they all "sound the same." This could represent the pressure to conform to a certain image or stereotype. However, the singer acknowledges that it doesn't matter where someone is from, as they are all talking in a way that lacks authenticity. The line "Listen to the elevator hum, the mechanism is breaking down again" symbolizes the breakdown of societal expectations and the urge to speak one's truth, even in the face of potential disapproval.
The repeated refrain in the bridge reinforces the singer's plea for understanding and acceptance. The use of "I want you to" creates a sense of urgency and sincerity. They want others to believe that they are just like them, emphasizing the shared human experience. The desire for freedom and happiness is expressed, highlighting the need for individuals to feel comfortable in their own skin.
Overall, "Elevator Hum" is a reflective and introspective song that delves into the complexities of identity, social pressures, and the longing for connection. It encourages listeners to embrace their uniqueness and to find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their struggles.

@urlocalghost
this has got to be the best produced declan song to date. the soundscapes, what seem to be string samples, and the overall instrument choices bring a much needed breath of fresh air to the bedroom / indie sound. whole lot of kudos to whoever’s producing his new album!! it’s gonna be amazing

So you captured the essence of Bedroom Pop and really made it your own.
It sounds like a really interesting new direction from your previous songs, but you also made me feel like they live in the same home as your other songs, and they work in harmony.
You're my favorite artistic personality glow-up of the year ❤🔥
