Paracetamol
Declan Mckenna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a boy, fifteen, with a gun in his hand
And the people all say he should be hanged
And they ask him for his motive, but they don't understand
Why they love like they do, like they do
There's a girl, fifteen, with her head in a noose
Because she's damned to live or she's damned to choose
And the animals walked in two's by two's
Showing love, like they do, like they do
There's a girl, fifteen, although she isn't sure
Well how the hell could you want anything more?
A beautiful, perfect, immaculate whore
I'm in love, love with you, love with you
Oh, won't you let me finish
You drive me insane
The world will keep on turning
Even if we're not the same
Don't come on to me, come on to me
There's a boy, fifteen, turning into a man
But tell me one other thing that he can
Were you forced a smile through a jealous hand?
Showing love like you do, like you do
There's a boy, fifteen, and he's attempted to sue
Because he's definetely sure that it's true
And what kind of man, kind of man are you?
Showing love like you do, like you do
Ooh
Oh, won't you let me finish?
You drive me insane
The world will keep on turning
Even if we're not the same
Don't come on to me, come on to me
So tell me what's in your mind, so tell me what's in your mind
And don't forget your paracetamol smile
So tell me what's in your mind, so tell me what's in your mind
And don't forget your paracetamol smile
So tell me what's in your mind, so tell me what's in your mind
And don't forget your, paracetamol, smile
So tell me what's in your mind, so tell me what's in your mind
You're emotionaly-challenged
Why do you waste your talent?
The world around you's maddening

Do you have no shame?
Come on to me, come on to me

Overall Meaning

Declan Mckenna's song "Paracetamol" presents a compelling narrative about the struggles of young people in our society. The song describes a boy and a girl who are both only fifteen years old, struggling with the realities of life that seem to be beyond their control. The boy has a gun in his hand, while the girl has her head in a noose, displaying the extremes to which young people feel desperate, unloved, and confined without any escape from their circumstances. The song seems to be a commentary on how young people are often misunderstood by adults who fail to comprehend their internal struggles and the immense pressure they face from the world.

The lyrics continue to describe the girl as "a beautiful, perfect, immaculate whore," highlighting the contradiction between how society expects young women to look and the pressure they feel to conform. The boy attempts to sue, believing that it's his right to fight for justice, but the question raised is whether anyone has the power to change the system that shapes the world around them. That said, the world seems to be indifferent to their sufferings, and they don't receive the care they desire.

Overall, the song highlights the challenges young people face as they navigate through the complexities of the world, feeling helpless, isolated and misunderstood. However, the song also highlights that, despite such complex themes, it's important not to forget to smile, just as the singer advises listeners to keep their "paracetamol" smiles in order to keep going.

when i first started listening to a lot of declan mckenna, it was around the time i came out as trans.

which was... rough (to say the least)

this video was the first representation i saw of queer, trans love, and i think why it stuck with me so much was because this love was not without pain

it was not without pain, but such pain didn't diminish the love, didn't diminish the triumph of such love

when the protaganist says "well that's life," at the end set a tone for me i think. i used to get so upset about things, so upset about all these things that were affected by my transness and queerness that shouldn't have been, but were. when he says "well that's life," i think i decided that i agreed. that's life.

If you read the lyrics he says
“There’s a girl ,15, although she isn’t sure
Well how the hell could you want anything more...”
I guess that is stating the fact that he is seen as a girl and maybe still figuring out his identity...??? At least that’s how I take it 🤷‍♀️
Hope that helped( sorry if it didn’t)
