Deep Purple have had several line-up changes and were broken up for eight years from 1976 to 1984, with drummer Ian Paice being the band's only constant member. The first four line-ups, which constituted the band's original 1968–1976 run, are officially indicated as Mark I (1968–1969), Mark II (1969–1973), Mark III (1973–1975) and Mark IV (1975–1976). Mark I comprised the founding members of Deep Purple, Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Rod Evans (vocals), Jon Lord (keyboards), Paice (drums) and Nick Simper (bass), while Mark II was the most commercially successful line-up, with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover replacing Evans and Simper respectively. Mark III saw David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes replace Gillan and Glover respectively, while Mark IV featured Tommy Bolin replacing Blackmore. The band split in July 1976 and Bolin died from a drug overdose five months later. In 1984, Deep Purple reformed with the Mark II line-up, which remained in place until Joe Lynn Turner replaced Gillan in 1989. Gillan rejoined in 1992, with Blackmore leaving for the second and final time the following year. He was replaced temporarily by Joe Satriani and then permanently by Steve Morse. In 2002 Don Airey replaced Jon Lord, which saw Deep Purple settle into its longest running line-up, unchanged for the next twenty years, until Morse announced his departure from the band in 2022. His place was taken by Simon McBride. Paice, Glover, Gillan, Airey and McBride comprise the current line-up of Deep Purple.
Deep Purple were ranked number 22 on VH1's Greatest Artists of Hard Rock programme] and a poll on radio station Planet Rock ranked them 5th among the "most influential bands ever". The band received the Legend Award at the 2008 World Music Awards. Deep Purple (specifically Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Evans, and Hughes) were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Extremely wealthy
I swung in the trees
And did as I pleased
I thought I was rich
Oh yeah
Such sweet seduction
I could feel the suction
And doing no harm
Just making some deals
What a bitch
Money talks to me
Whispers in my ear
Gives me everything I want
Everything I want
I had rising stock
So I got more pockets
I knew somewhere to stick it
Where no-one would nick it
I kinda went private
And then, aha
Such sweet seclusion
No more intrusion
Too much food on my plate
But there's guards at the gate
Such joy
I could almost die of it
Money talks to me
Lays it on the line
Gives me everything I want
Everything I want
Money goes to money
Yes it always returns
Finds its way back to the big house
Where it lives all alone
Wraith like silent partners
Operators of the system
Give words of quiet assurance
To an otherwise healthy victim
It's all coming back to me
I would swing in the trees
And I'd swim in the ocean
I used to show some emotion
I was not to blame
I feel no shame
The structure was shaking
Was there for the taking
I had the resources
But then, oh no
Someone outbid me
I can't take it with me?
Then I will devour it
I can't go without it
It's simply a question of
Market forces
Money talks to me
Whispers in my ear
Gives me everything I want
Everything I want
Money talks to me
Laughs right in my face
Gives me everything I want
Everything I want
In Deep Purple's "Money Talks," the lyrics describe the journey of greed and the obsession with money. The song starts off by describing the singer's initial views of wealth and life without boundaries. He was young and healthy, extremely wealthy, and could do as he pleased without any consequences. The singer felt rich and fell under the seduction of money. He could feel the suction and see how easily it greased his palm without any harm, just making deals. But he quickly realized that money talks and whispers in his ear, giving him everything he wants. There was always more he could get, and there was no end to his desires.
The singer became obsessed with money and started hiding it in his pockets and sticking it where nobody could nick it. He went private and became reclusive, letting nobody intrude on his life. There was too much food on his plate; he almost died of joy. Despite his wealth and power, the singer became a victim of the system, controlled by silent wraith-like partners. The market forces dictated his life and made him prey to his insatiable appetite for more wealth. The song's climax showcases the singer, saying that he can't take the money with him, so he will devour it, as it's merely a question of market forces.

Yo era joven y saludable
Extremadamente poderoso
Me colgaba en los árboles
Y hacia lo que me placía
Yo pensaba que era rico
Oh si
Tan dulce seducción
Podía sentir la succión
Engrasando mi palma
Y no haciendo daños
Solo haciendo unos tratos
Que perra
El dinero habla conmigo
Susurra en mis oídos
Me da todo lo que quiero
Todo lo que quiero
Tuve una subida en las acciones
Así que tuve más bolsillos
Sabía donde meterlo
Donde nadie podía averiguarlo
Como que me volví privado
Pero luego oh, oh
Que dulce seclusión
No más intrusión
Demasiada comida en mi plato
Pero hay guardas en la puerta
Tanta diversión
Que pude morirme de eso
El dinero habla conmigo
Pone todo en la línea
Me da todo lo que quiero
Todo lo que quiero
El dinero va al dinero
Si, siempre retorna
Encuentra su camino a la vieja casa
Donde vive completamente sola
Iracundos socios silenciosos
Operadores del sistema
Dan palabras de callada confianza
A una, de otra forma, víctima saludable
Oh, ya estoy recordando todo
Estaba columpiándome en los árboles
Estaba nadando en el océano, ouououou
Solía mostrar alguna emoción
No soy el culpable
No siento nada de vergüenza
La estructura estaba tambaleando
Yo estaba allá para agarrar algo
Tenía los recursos
Pero luego, oh, no
Alguien me superó?
No puedo llevármelo conmigo?
Entonces tengo que devorarlo
No puedo vivir sin él
Es una simple cuestión
De las fuerzas del mercado
El dinero habla conmigo
Susurra en mis oídos
Me da todo lo que quiero
El dinero habla conmigo
Se ríe en mi cara
Me da todo lo que quiero
Todo lo que quiero
