The Pope
Deine Lakaien Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The pope was in a splendid mood on a pretty day,
Gave his benediction to his servants,
"The more you suffer in life,
The more you will be elevated
In eternity, in eternity, in eternity, in eternity, ..."

"Hey there, bring me the infidels!
Bring me the heathens!
On such a pretty day, the fires will grow high.
Their bodies may turn to ashes,
But their souls will burn from now
To eternity, to eternity, to eternity, to eternity, ..."

The pope left his throne to watch the spectacle.
Unfortunately stumbled on his robe.
As his head crashed into the marble.
The colours vanished, and darkness gave him

The final answer:
No eternity! No eternity! No eternity! No eternity!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Deine Lakaien's song "The Pope" interestingly satirizes the concept of eternal life and the role of the head of the Catholic Church. The song starts by portraying the Pope as being in a "splendid mood" on a pretty day, giving his blessing to his servants. He then asserts that the more they suffer in life, the greater their reward in eternity. This idea is juxtaposed with the Pope's call to bring him the infidels and heathens to be burned at the stake, suggesting that such violence is also necessary for eternal life.

The song takes a dramatic turn when the Pope stumbles on his robe and crashes his head onto the marble floor. The final answer, he realizes, is that there is no eternity. This final line serves as a reminder of the stark reality of our own mortality and how the ideologies we live by may not hold up in the face of such harsh truths. The song's themes of false promises and the inevitable end of life make it a poignant critique of the power structures and beliefs that often govern our lives.

I was there! I remember this concert very fondly, certainly the most special experience of the eight (if memory serves) Deine Lakaien concerts I attended, and I gladly accept the thanks ;-) (I'm referring to "Therefore, at this point, a very big thank you to all of you who were there back then!" in the description).
