As a child, Dennis was singing as part of a church choir in Brooklyn at the age of 7, but later moved to Virginia, and signed up to the US Air Force at 18, with whom he served for six years. Taylor then returned to New York, and following his earlier success in a talent competition, was able to secure a minor recording contract, although he failed to garner any wide-scale success. His biggest break came when he was asked to perform backing vocals on the Robin S hit Gonna Raise The Child in the early 1990s.
It wasn't until the year 2000 that he recorded his first album, 'Enough is Enough' at the Homeboy Studios in New Jersey, working with producers Fred McFarlane and Darryl James, a DJ well-known for his mixes on New York radio station WRKS. The album was received favourably, particularly among UK soul critics. Taylor performed his first UK concert at the Jazz Café in London, a gig that was partially responsible for the artist securing a contract with UK-based record label Dome in 2001. Dennis was well-received by the UK audience who particularly loved his songs 'Enough is Enough' and 'Out of Control'. His second album 'Unconditional' also won over reviewers, and owed its success in part to the heavy airplay of singles Steppin' and It's Over on the London radio station 102.2 Jazz FM (and then jazzfm.com which relaunched as Jazz FM). A subsequent UK tour followed.
Taylor also duetted with soul performer Beverlei Brown on her album 'Next To You', collaborating on the song Could Be You.
Taylor's most recent album, 'In The Mood', was released in 2003 and included the Sam Dees-penned duet Am I Dreaming?, recorded with Wincey Terry. He continues to sporadically tour the UK.
Love Need and Want You

With yesterday
We had a love for all seasons
At least that's how it used to be
There was no time, space, or reason
More special to us than we
My love continued to flourish
Then you tried to play love for silly
But the loser is the fool who doesn't play
Love by the rules
If she breaks your heart
I will send a robin to sing happy tunes for you
Cause I may not be around to do the things
I used to do
And if you awake to find you're lost
I will send a glad star to lead you on your way
Cause the love I felt inside
Has gone away with yesterday
My love is gone with yesterday, my love is gone
With yesterday
There was a time when forever
Was common-place for me and you
Laughing, loving, sharing, caring
Seemed to be made just for us two
But I kept on building the dream world
That I thought was you and I
Sorry, I'm sadly mistaken
Cause our castle in the sky
Has turned into a mere goodbye
If she breaks your heart
I will send a robin to sing happy tunes for you
Cause I may not be around to do the things
I used to do
And if you awake to find you're lost
I will send a glad star to lead you on your way
Cause the love I felt inside
Has gone away with yesterday
[Repeat]
Love is gone away with yesterday
[Repeat]
In the song "Love Need and Want You" by Dennis Taylor, the lyrics depict the sorrowful aftermath of a failed love. The opening lines "My love is gone with yesterday, my love is gone with yesterday" establishes that the relationship is over and the singer's love has dissipated. The following lines reflect on the past, how they had a love for all seasons and there was no time, space or reason more special than what they shared. Despite the relationship going well, the singer's partner betrayed them by playing love for silly and failing to follow the rules of love, causing the singer's love to wither away.
The song also has a bittersweet tone as the singer reveals that they still care for their ex-lover despite everything they've gone through. The lines "If she breaks your heart, I will send a robin to sing happy tunes for you" indicate a continued presence of concern and the genuine connection that existed between the two. However, the singer has also come to terms with their relationship ending as they reflect that their love has gone away with yesterday.
Interestingly, "Love Need and Want You" was not originally sung by Dennis Taylor but by Patti LaBelle in 1983. The song then gained popularity and was covered by several artists, including Taylor. Additionally, the song's writer, Bunny Sigler, was a legendary songwriter and producer known for working with artists such as The O'Jays, Gladys Knight, and Jackie Wilson. The song has also been sampled by various artists in the hip hop and R&B industry.
