Get the Balance Right!
Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's more besides the joyrides
Little house in the countryside
Understand, learn to demand
Compromise, and sometimes lie

Get the balance right
Get the balance right
Be responsible, respectable
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring
Help the helpless
But always remain
Ultimately selfish

Get the balance right
Get the balance right

When you think you've got a hold of it all
You haven't got a hold at all (all)
When you reach the top
Get ready to drop
Prepare yourself for the fall (the fall)
You're going to fall
It's almost predictable
(Almost)

Don't tend this way
Don't tend that way
Straight down the middle until next Thursday
First to the left
Back to the right
Twist and turn until you got it right

Get the balance right
Get the balance right

Get the balance right
Get the balance right
(Almost)
Get the balance right
Get the balance right

(Almost)
Get the balance right

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Depeche Mode's "Get The Balance Right" seem to encourage achieving balance and moderation in life. The first few lines suggest that there is more to life than just indulging in joyrides and material possessions; having a little house in the countryside could offer more fulfillment than that. The next lines seem to give advice on finding balance in life. To "understand, learn to demand" means being aware of what you want and asking for it. The line "Compromise, and sometimes lie" suggests that finding balance may require dishonesty at times or sacrificing one's principles in order to achieve a greater goal.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Get the balance right" four times, emphasizing the importance of finding balance. The following lines describe the qualities one should aspire to have in order to achieve balance, including being responsible, respectable, stable, and caring. However, the line "Stable but gullible" may suggest that sometimes being too stable or predictable could make one vulnerable to deception. The final line "But always remain ultimately selfish" may seem contradictory but implies that in order to care for others, one must also care for themselves.

The bridge discusses the challenges of achieving balance, as if to suggest that no one has it all figured out. No matter how much one thinks they have it under control, they are still susceptible to unexpected falls and failures. The remaining lines suggest a way to approach finding balance, by avoiding extremes and instead, taking a middle path until you "got it right."

Overall, the lyrics of "Get The Balance Right" seem to encourage finding balance and moderation in life, recognizing that it can be a challenging process with many ups and downs. The song offers advice on how to achieve balance and suggests that it is necessary to care for oneself in order to care for others.

I love the arpeggios and bass to this song .. and this is when they were all there a part of the band

Their music is like a story in time

Some times darker than others but a mysterious journey nonetheless and the lyrics are deep

The things they do with sound from pots and pans to pebbles down steps is mesmerizing

They did the stuff of ASMR before it even became a thing

They just synthesize so many feelings man

Uhh I gotta go to bed

This music and some weed just takes you to places ya know

especially on the edge of sleep

sometimes magical honestly can't explain it any other way

I'm 48 and reminds me of just before my teen years. This track got regular rotation on KROQ in the 80's, not to mention air time on Mtv. Great time for music!
