In Your Room
Depeche Mode Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In your room
Where time stands still
Or moves at your will

Will you let the morning come soon
Or will you leave me lying here?
In your favourite darkness
Your favourite half-light
Your favourite consciousness
Your favourite slave

In your room
Where souls disappear
Only you exist here

Will you lead me to your armchair
Or leave me lying here?
Your favourite innocence
Your favourite prize
Your favourite smile
Your favourite slave

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?
I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?
I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

In your room
Your burning eyes
Cause flames to arise
Will you let the fire die down soon?
Or will I always be here
Your favourite passion
Your favourite game
Your favourite mirror
Your favourite slave

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath
Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

I'm hanging on your words
Living on your breath

Feeling with your skin
Will I always be here?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Depeche Mode's "In Your Room" describe a place where time stands still or moves at the will of the person who occupies it. The room is the place where the singer wants to be, and though it is a place of darkness and half-light, it is the place where the person he desires most resides. The singer is at the mercy of this person, who has become his favorite slave, and he is willing to be there no matter what it takes. He wants to be led to their armchair, where he can feel the passion that comes from their burning eyes. Despite the flames that arise from those eyes, the singer will always be there, living on the breath of his beloved.

The song is an intense examination of desire and dependency, as the singer is hanging on the words of the person he desires, living on their breath, and feeling with their skin. The room becomes a world where the person he desires is the only one who exists, where his soul disappears, and where he is willing to be a slave to their favorite game, passion, and mirror. Despite this dependency, the singer is also aware that he is at risk of being left behind, wondering if he will always be there, hanging on their words, living on their breath, feeling with their skin.
