You like rain, but only if it's dry
There's no sentimental value to the rose that fell on your floor
There's no fundamental excuse for the granted I'm taken for
'Cause it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you
You like pain but only if it doesn't hurt too much
And you sit, and you wait, to receive
There's an obvious attraction
To the path of least resistance in your life
Well, there's an obvious aversion no amount of my insistence
Could make you try tonight
'Cause it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you
To you, to you, to you, to you, to you
There's no love, no money, no thrill anymore
Well, there's an apprehensive, naked, little trembling boy
With his head in his hands
And there's an underestimated and impatient little girl
Raising her hand
But it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you
To you, to you
Get up, get up, get up off of it
Get up, get up, get up off of it
Get out, get outta here, enough already
Get up, get up, get up off of it
Wake up
In the first verse, the lyrics talk about someone who has specific preferences and conditions for enjoying things. They like snow, but only if it's warm, and rain, but only if it's dry. This could symbolize a person who wants to experience certain things, but only on their terms and in a way that suits their comfort. The line about the rose falling on the floor without sentimental value suggests that this person may not attach emotional significance to things that others might consider important or meaningful. Similarly, they don't see any valid reason for acknowledging the things they take for granted.
The chorus emphasizes the theme of apathy and the ease of not caring. It states that it's much easier for this person to not care about things that happen or the consequences of their actions. The phrase "what goes around never comes around to you" implies that they don't believe in karma or the idea that their choices and actions will have any repercussions.
The second verse delves deeper into the person's character traits. They claim to like pain, but only if it doesn't hurt too much. This could suggest a tendency to seek out challenging or intense experiences, but only if they can stay within their comfort zone. The lyrics then mention waiting to receive, indicating a passive attitude towards life and a desire for things to come to them rather than actively pursuing them.
The verse goes on to describe how there is an apparent attraction towards taking the path of least resistance in this person's life. They naturally gravitate towards easy options or avoiding difficulties. On the contrary, there is resistance to trying harder or making an effort, regardless of any insistence from others.
The third verse begins by stating that there is no love, no money, and no thrill left for this person. This may suggest a sense of emptiness or dissatisfaction in their life. The lyrics then depict a scene of a vulnerable and afraid little boy with his head in his hands, as well as an underestimated and impatient little girl raising her hand. These characters signify vulnerability and a desire for attention or validation.
The chorus is repeated, reaffirming the idea that it is easier for this person to remain apathetic and detached. The lyrics call for them to wake up and take action or responsibility for their life. It's a plea to move away from complacency and start actively engaging with life.
Overall, the lyrics of "Wake Up" convey a message about the ease of not caring, how certain individuals prefer to experience life on their own terms, and the repercussions of such an apathetic approach. The song also hints at the need for self-awareness and the importance of taking action to break free from a state of passivity.
