Crossroads
Derek and the Dominos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees
Asked the lord above for mercy, "save me if you please"

I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
I went down to the crossroads, tried to flag a ride
Nobody seemed to know me, everybody passed me by

I'm going down to rosedale, take my rider by my side
I'm going down to rosedale, take my rider by my side
You can still barrelhouse, baby, on the riverside

You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy willie brown
You can run, you can run, tell my friend-boy willie brown
And I'm standing at the crossroads, believe I'm sinking down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Derek and the Dominos's song Crossroads speak of a person's desperation as they turn to the Lord for salvation. The singer expresses their hopelessness at the crossroads and kneels down, asking for mercy. They go on to describe their attempts to get a ride out of there, but no one pays any attention to them. It seems like they're trying to escape something terrible, but no one is willing to help them. In the final lines, the singer seems to accept their fate and predicts their own downfall.

The crossroads have a lot of significance in mythology and literature. They're often seen as a place of transformation and decision-making. In African American folklore, it's believed that the devil meets people at the crossroads and offers them a deal for their soul in exchange for talent or success. The singer of this song seems to be dealing with something very similar, as they're desperate for salvation but seem to be acknowledging their own downfall.
