Stand In
Deva Mahal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Careless
You were so careless with my heart
And you damn near
You damn near tore it apart
Told me your lovin′ (lovin')
Somebody else (somebody else)
But you still want to keep me (keep me)
Sittin′ here on your shelf (mm)

I'm no stand in
I'm no one′s second best
Not your "maybe I might call her"
When there′s no one else left to impress

Hopeless
I'm hopelessly lost in you
And now it′s clear to me, baby
You just want your cake and eat it too
Go on now, go (go on)
Go ahead and walk out that door (walk out that door)
And don't you ever (ever)
Don′t you ever never call me no more

I'm no stand in
I′m no one's second best
Not no "maybe I might call her"
When there's no one else left to impress

And I′m no side piece
I′m not just some bump on the road
I'm not the "oh maybe be your baby"
When you′ve got someone else
I won't

I′m a diamond, diamond
Shining bright, glittering gold (glittering gold)
Maybe I'm the best thing
The best thing you′ve ever had
The strength to hold
Oh

I'm no stand in (stand in)
I'm no one′s second best (oh no no, second best)
I′m no "maybe I might call her"
When there's no one else left to impress (when there′s no one else)
And baby I'm no side piece (I′m no side piece)
I'm not just some bump on the road
I′m no "maybe be your baby"

When you've got someone else
Someone else to hold (someone else to hold)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Deva Mahal's song "Stand In" convey a message of self-worth and refusing to be treated as an option or a backup. The singer expresses her pain and frustration towards someone who was careless with her heart, almost tearing it apart. This person claimed to love somebody else but still wanted to keep her as a secondary option, leaving her sitting on a shelf. The singer emphasizes that she is not a stand-in or anyone's second best. She won't tolerate being someone's "maybe I might call her" when there's no one else left to impress.

The chorus further reinforces the singer's determination to assert her worth. She realizes that she has been hopelessly lost in a relationship where her partner only wanted to have it all—an unfair desire to have their cake and eat it too. Despite this realization, the singer demands the person to leave and never call her again, as she refuses to be treated as a disposable option.

I saw Deva live at Freight and Salvage in Berkeley a couple of years ago. It was amazing. Real, organic and emotional are some of the words I would use to describe her performance. I can’t wait for this world to go back to some semblance of normalcy so I can see her performance live again. Oakland here
