Salty Seas
Devics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I felt like you cared
I'm not saying that
I want to go back
The salty sea behind the eyes
and it's the tears
that come and make me cry
the falling leaf that never tries
keeps it alive
I was so green
nothing could touch me
I'm not saying that
this is good or bad
I'm not saying that
I wanna go
The salty sea behind the eyes
and it's the tears
that come and make me cry
the falling leaf that never tries
to hold on to what
keeps it alive
the summer dream behind the eye
and it's the sleep that makes me alive
the sudden ease when you arrive
and it's you
that makes me try
In Devics' song Salty Seas, the singer reflects on a past relationship and the emotions it elicits within her. She begins by acknowledging that she doesn't necessarily believe that the other person cared for her, but she's also not saying she wants to return to their relationship. The "salty sea behind the eyes" refers to the tears she sheds, reminiscent of the ocean's salty waters. She recognizes that it's the tears that make her cry, indicating that her own emotional pain is causing her tears rather than any external factors. She draws a metaphorical comparison to a falling leaf, which never tries to hold on to what keeps it alive, which could symbolize the singer's inability to hold on to what she needed in the relationship.
The singer then reminisces about how she used to feel when the relationship was new, claiming she was so "green" that nothing could touch her. She refrains from calling the relationship good or bad, instead of choosing to reflect on the emotions it provoked in her. She recognizes that the summer dream behind her eyes is the sleep that makes her feel alive, demonstrating that the relationship was once essential to her to some degree. She speaks of the sudden ease she feels when the other person arrives, signaling that they still hold some power over her emotions. She acknowledges that it's them that makes her want to try, implying that their presence motivates her to keep going.
