Night
Devin Townsend Project Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I am, driving through Japan at night
Here I am, pretending everything's alright
And I've got so far to go before the morn
And I can't believe how much it hurts at home

Here I am, living life inside a comic book
Here I am, bored with everything...
And I can't believe that I'm here to stay
'Cause I never worked it out this way
And I love you more than I can say
But I hate you every other way

Rain falling down
Rain falling down
Rain falling down
Rain falling down over me

I think I'm closer now
I think I'm closer now
Under the light of the moon

And I can't believe that I'm here to stay
'Cause I never worked it open
And I love you more than I can say
But I hate you every other

And I came away from falling apart
In the corner of an aching heart
So say you'll come back to the city
Come back with me please, oh

Rain falling down
Rain falling down
Rain falling down
Rain falling down

Falling down
Falling down
Falling down
Falling down

Falling down
Falling down

Overall Meaning

The Devin Townsend Project's "Night" paints a picture of a person driving through Japan at night, trying to escape their troubles at home. They are trying to convince themselves that everything is alright, but deep down inside, they know they're not. The song speaks about how they've got a long way to go before morning, and how difficult it is to deal with the pain and hurt back home. The feeling of being lost and disconnected is further emphasized when the singer mentions living life inside a comic book and feeling plain "bored."

As the song progresses, the singer confesses their love for someone even though they hate them in every other way. They are in a state of confusion and can't believe that they're stuck where they are, unable to work their way out of their current situation. The mood of the song shifts when the chorus hits, and the listener is transported to a scene of rain falling down, with the singer seeming to hope that they are closer to finding what they're looking for.

The song is a reflection on the feeling of being stuck and not knowing what to do, of looking for an escape but feeling unable to find it. It is a heartfelt, emotional expression of the pain and uncertainty that can come with life, and the struggle to find a way to move forward.

Is it just me, or does he have one of the greatest performance drummers in the world? This guy that we see on the vast majority of Devin's YouTube videos, has the constant energy of a chocolate-infused 3-year-old!!!

He's a true professional. Seen Dev's documentaries, and Ryan hits every beat with the same intensity. It makes him way easier to capture recordings and live mics A lot of Dev's music isn't that hard to play - unless you're the drummer. He's a motivational speaker and super cool dude as well
