Night
Devin Townsend (Ocean Machine) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here I am, driving through Japan at night
Here I am, pretending everything's alright
And I've got so far to go before the morn
And I can't believe how much it hurts at home

Here I am, living life inside a comic book
Here I am, bored with everything...
And I can't believe that I'm here to stay
'Cause I never worked it out this way
And I love you more than I can say
But I hate you every other way

Rain, falling down
Rain, falling down
Rain, falling down
Rain, falling down over me

I think I'm closer now
I think I'm closer now
I'm getting closer now
Under the light of the moon

And I can't believe that I'm here to
Stay, 'cause I never worked it out...
And I love you more than I can say
But I hate you every other...
And I'll keep my world from falling apart
In the corner of an aching heart

So say you'll come into the city
Come back with me please...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Devin Townsend's song "Night" express a sense of detachment, loneliness, and alienation from the world around him. The singer finds himself driving through Japan at night, feeling numb and disconnected while trying to maintain the illusion of everything being "alright." He reflects upon his life as if it is a comic book that has become boring to him. The lyrics suggest that despite all the distance, pain, and frustration, the singer is still in love with someone but struggles with feelings of hate for them as well.

The chorus shifts the mood of the song to a melancholic one, as the singer describes the rain falling down on him, perhaps as a metaphor for his own tears. He then switches to a more hopeful tone, as he feels that he is getting closer to finding himself and his place in the world. However, he still feels like he is a corner of an aching heart, trying to prevent his world from falling apart.

Overall, the lyrics of "Night" convey a sense of emotional turmoil, self-doubt, and the search for meaning in the face of an indifferent and confusing world.

Amazing! I've started to listen all the stuff from Devin Townsend right from Strapping Young Lad! Thank you very much, Bro!!! I wanna create 100% correct and complete lyrics from all of his albums and put it to darklyrics.com for all his fans. Maybe, can you help with some other tracks from Ocean Machine? I have trobles with "rare" lyrics:
"GREETINGS" the spoken background words from 1 min. 40 sec. to 1 min. 47 sec. It's right between these lyrics:
"And bore them
So call it home, home"
I can here something about "aliens" or something...
"HIDE NOWHERE" the LYRICS from 2 min. 37 sec. to 3 min. 50 sec. I checked out all the web and didn't find anything! It sounds like:
Hide nowhere
Hide nowhere
Hide nowhere
I have now place to go [x3]

Hide nowhere
Hide nowhere
Hide nowhere
I have now place to hide

(everything comes an end, yeah, so)

Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah…

this album has an unexplainable vibe. I connect with it in so many ways. it's one of my favorite albums of all time.

@Naomi I totally agree with the both of you. It does generate a euphoria, I was listening to this for the umpteenth time in history with my brother, and I stated how I felt averse to think about comparing this record to any other that's been out there that I've been exposed to. It satisfies my conscience and my imaginings to an indiscernable degree, like the very thing I've been looking for in music. The wall of sound that Devin produces with those crushing riffs and waves of musical tones is something that resonates with my soul profoundly, it's like an endlessly exploding cloud of anti-matter that instills awe, or perhaps more thematically appropriate an ocean wave crashing down and continuously swallowing objects into the glory of atoms vivifying and sending things into a rush. This record speaks to me like none other, I'm thankful to have been introduced to such supreme and non-coincidental empathy.

I totally agree. Despite the intensity of some of the songs here, there's that certain vibe that just always calms me down and puts me in a euphoric mood, and for that it's my favorite album of all time. Nothing really comes close for me, I connect to this album too much to have any other be anywhere close as good for me.

This song gives me a very clear visual of Devin playing guitar standing on the hood of a convertable with the drummer in the back and his bandmates and no one driving but they're speeding around mountain top roads in a crazy thunderstorm and then the car flies off a cliff and takes off into the stars
