A Life Without You
Dewey Cox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, my darlin'

Oh, my darlin'

Yeah, yeah, yeah

I have a perfect life
You are the perfect wife

I don't know why

I sit and cry

And now I miss you so

Please don't let me go

I'll make mistakes and that is true

At least I learn each time I do

Darling, you must believe

I could never leave you if I tried

A life without you is no life at all

Oh, my darlin'

Oh, my darlin'

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Tears fall in vain

I'm standing in the rain

No matter how I feel

I never seem to know what's real

So sharpen up your knives

Stab me in the eyes

I want to cry rivers of blood

I want to drown myself in your love

Darling, you must believe

I could never leave you if I tried

A life without you is no life at all

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dewey Cox's song "A Life Without You" convey a message of love, longing and emotional pain. The song suggests that the singer has a perfect life with a perfect wife, yet he still finds himself crying and missing her. The chorus emphasizes the importance of this person in the singer's life, stating that without her, life is not worth living. Moreover, the lyrics go on to suggest that the singer is willing to go to great lengths to be with his loved one, even if that means experiencing pain and suffering.

The second verse of the song further highlights the singer's pain and confusion. The lyrics suggest that he is unable to distinguish between his emotions and what is real. The use of the metaphor "sharpen up your knives, stab me in the eyes" implies that the singer is willing to endure physical pain if it means being able to feel something, even if it is a painful emotion.

Overall, "A Life Without You" is a song about the importance of love and human connection. It suggests that even when everything seems perfect, there can still be a deep sense of longing and that life without love is devoid of meaning.

This movie's intention was to be a goofy comedy, but the music actually turned out to be wonderful. The entire soundtrack is wonderful, but this one is my favorite. You can feel the emotion in the way JCR is singing.

indigoskiess

Not one oscar nomination. NOT ONE. Dreamgirls/Enchanted had three. What a fucking joke.

I love how they blended the stories of lots of different musicians into Dewey Cox's history. He's mainly supposed to be like Johnny Cash, but there are bits of Buddy Holly, Brian Wilson, and Bob Dylan in his development. And this song is obviously supposed to be like Roy Orbison.
