Starman
Dewey Cox Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Goodbye love, goodbye love
Didn't know what time it was the lights were low
I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was layin' down some rock 'n' roll lotta soul, he said

Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no DJ that was hazy cosmic jive

There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds

Theres a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me, "Let the children lose it
Let the children use it, let all the children boogie"

I had to phone someone so I picked up on you
Hey, that's far out so you heard him too
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two

Look out your window I can see his light
If we can sparkle he may land tonight
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright

There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds

Theres a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me, "Let the children lose it
Let the children use it, let all the children boogie"

Starman, he's waiting in the sky
Starman, someday he'll blow our minds
Starman, won't you come on down and see me some time?
Say, starman someday come down and fly

Starman
Thank you

Overall Meaning

The song "Starman" by Dewey Cox is a nostalgic ode to the power and magic of music, featuring catchy and memorable lyrics infused with cosmic imagery. The song opens with a reference to a past love relationship, as the singer listens to the radio, seeking escape from the mundane and routine of his life. He hears a strange and unfamiliar voice, speaking in a mysterious jargon that he cannot understand. The voice is both strange and alluring, promising something beyond the typical rock and roll experience.

As the song progresses, the voice is revealed to belong to a "starman" who is waiting in the sky, hoping to connect with humanity. Despite his desire to meet us, the starman is cautious, aware of the potential danger of his powers. He warns against danger and urges the children to enjoy the gift of music, to use it to its fullest potential.

Overall, "Starman" is a song about the power of music to transcend the limitations of our everyday lives, connecting us to something larger and more wondrous. It's a reminder to embrace our inner child, to open ourselves to the mysteries of the universe, and to let the music guide us on our journey.

I remember when this first aired in '77. I was 10 and I liked it, especially the background dancers, but my parents thought Dewey sold out by embracing disco. They were fans of his earlier work, especially A Life Without You (Is No Life At All). I told them, "Things change. This is boss."

@SuperStanster

Exactly!!! We all loved Dewey's early songs, but I loved how his music changed and grew with the times. I loved him as a kid and as a teenager his music really helped me through some hard times!

@freeherenow52

@Stanley Rama I'm so glad other people get it. Dewey was the voice of many generations.

If any of you lived through the great variety show scare of the 1970s, you'd understand how hilarious and dead-on this is. Genius!!

The Sonny and Cher show...Look for the clips where Bowie actually was on Cher's show pairing up for a medley...

@DJSamsonofficial

look up Bag boy. It's John c Reilly's take at a sitcom (he plays as his well known character dr. Steve Brule)
