Can’t Do Without You

Long time no see
Still remember your face
'Cause I see it in my dreams
Boy you're looking good
But then you always did
Who's the chick with the pretty face
Don't tell me you want us to be friends
That's something I just can't do
Boyfriend I'm sorry, forgive me
I got plans for you
I don't like your new gal friend
'Cause she's standing in the place
Where I should have been
I don't like your new gal friend
She's messing with my head
She's sleeping in my bed
See I had it all worked out
To get you back as my man
To have her in my way
Wasn't part of the plan
What is this I see
A new shinning diamond ring
Are you sure she has no secrets
'Cause I've heard so many things
Was it so easy to leave me
And find somebody new
You'll be sorry, without me
She's no good for you
I don't like your new gal friend
'Cause she's standing in the place
Where I should have been
I don't like your new gal friend
She's messing with my head
She's sleeping in my bed
I don't like your new gal friend
And I don't think that you should
Ever see her again
I don't like your new gal friend
She's messing up my plan
She's fucking with my man
Diana King’s song “Can’t Do Without You” explores the emotions of a woman who is still in love with her ex-boyfriend. The song starts with a greeting after a long time apart, but instead of catching up, the singer immediately notices the new girl in her ex’s life. Although the singer thinks the new girl is pretty, she is upset because the new girlfriend now occupies the space in her ex’s life that she wanted to have, and she’s upset that the new girl is even “sleeping in my bed”.
The song is filled with jealousy and regrets that the singer wasn’t able to keep her ex-boyfriend happy. She has hopes of getting him back, but the new girlfriend is in the way. The lyrics ask questions that reveal the singer’s insecurities and doubts about the new relationship, and she finds it impossible to be just friends with her ex. The chorus emphasizes the singer’s feelings towards the new girl, “I don't like your new gal friend, 'Cause she's standing in the place, Where I should have been, She's messing with my head, She's sleeping in my bed”. The song ends with the singer warning her ex about his new girlfriend, “I don't like your new gal friend, She's messing up my plan, She's fucking with my man”.
In summary, Diana King’s “Can’t Do Without You” portrays the emotions of a woman who is bitter and unhappy about her ex’s new girlfriend, who she feels is in the way of her getting back together with her ex. It is a story of jealousy and unfulfilled love that may resonate with many who have experienced heartbreak in relationships.
