Kiss Me Sailor
Diane Renay Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Kiss me, sailor, before you go out the door
Well, now, bye bye sailor boy
Cause it's Anchors aweigh once more

Well, I'm his girl back home and, on a weekend leave
I'm the very first one that he runs to see
We find a lot of things to do
But pretty soon the weekends though and then it's

Kiss me, sailor, before you go out the door
Baby, bye bye sailor boy
Cause it's Anchors aweigh once more

There's never any place we ever wanna go
Wed rather snuggle up and watch the late, late show
We like to make the hours last
But 48 hours go fast

Kiss me, sailor, before you go out the door
Whoa whoa, bye bye sailor boy
Cause it's Anchors aweigh once more

Well, it's a Friday night, my favrite guy is due
I just can't wait to see him in his Na-a-a-avy blue
As soon as he opens that door
I'll be in his arms once more until it's

Kiss-a me, sailor, before you go out the door

Whoa whoa, bye bye sailor boy
Cause it's Anchors aweigh once more

Overall Meaning

"Kiss Me Sailor" is a song by Diane Renay, a pop singer who was popular in the early 1960s. The song is about a sailor and his girlfriend who enjoy spending time together when he is on leave, but their time together is always limited because he has to return to duty. The lyrics express the desire to make the most of their time together before he has to leave again.

The first verse of the song sets the scene. The sailor is leaving, and the singer asks him to kiss her before he goes. She says goodbye and acknowledges that he will be at sea again, with the phrase "Anchors aweigh once more." The second verse describes their time together when the sailor is on leave. They are happy to spend time at home, watching TV and enjoying each other's company. However, the time together always seems to go by too quickly.

The final verse is the singer's anticipation of her sailor's return. She is excited to see him and wants to spend as much time with him as possible. She imagines him arriving in his Navy uniform, and she plans to greet him with a kiss. The song then repeats the chorus, asking the sailor to kiss her before he goes.

Overall, "Kiss Me Sailor" is a bittersweet love song that captures the emotions of a couple whose time together is always limited by the sailor's military duties.

I love both Navy Blue and Kiss Me Sailor, always have, always will!  Their overall sound / production style is similar but Kiss Me Sailor has more echo which gives it a certain poignancy and thus a different emotional impact.  10 out of 10 for both!

I really like Growin' Up Too Fast as well, which I first heard only when I bought the compilation of the same name.

I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was standing in line at the Navy Boot Camp in The Great Lakes facility, in March of 1964.
