Adrian Hates was originally a classically trained guitarist and pianist, and subsequently bassist of Garden of Delight. He initiated the Diary of Dreams project in the late 1980s, taking the name from one of his early classical guitar compositions, 'Tagebuch der Träume'. The first album, 'Cholymelan', appeared in 1994 on the Dion Fortune label.
Encouraged by this success, Adrian formed his own label Accession and released a string of albums over the following years, building a loyal fanbase each step of the way. The second album 'End of Flowers' was released in 1996, expanding on the darkwave sound of the debut. 'Bird Without Wings' followed a year later, whilst the more experimental work 'Psychoma?' arrived in 1998.
The first sign of consolidation came in 1999, when a compilation album 'Moments of Bloom' appeared, containing two reworked tracks from each album. The next two albums 'One of 18 Angels' and 'Freak Perfume' (plus its companion EP 'PaniK Manifesto') made greater use of electronic rhythms, resulting in greater club play and wider recognition for the band.
Their 2004 'Nigredo' (a concept album inspired by a mythology the band designed themselves) saw a move back towards the more subtle, sparse concepts of old, but still featuring bursts of their more recent, dance-oriented sound. Songs from the Nigredo tour were later released on the live CD 'aLive' and the companion DVD 'Nine In Numbers'. The next Diary of Dreams album 'Nekrolog 43' was released in 2007, offering a greater variety of moods and concepts than previous works. Adrian Hates claims to be influenced, both lyric wise and artwork wise, by the German 1909-1935 expressionism and the "beauty of ugliness" in the course of his work.
The ninth album entitled "(if)" was released on March 13, 2009.

Homesick
Diary of Dreams Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And regret the things we did
Everything is said and done
We pretend to be alone
Can we avoid the next step we do
Can we feel without even trying
Can we whisper when we scream
What I can say to you
Will never change a thought
I whisper my good-bye to turn my back on you
In endless speeches day by day
We promise every word we say
We trust the ones we know
To reject who need us most
Too blind to see the grey
That you carry in your eyes
The lyrics of "HomeSick" by Diary of Dreams explore themes of doubt, regret, and loneliness. The opening lines suggest a sense of reflection and remorse for past actions. The singer questions whether they can avoid making similar mistakes in the future, and whether they can feel genuine emotions without putting in any effort. The line "Is it my silence that you bring to me" suggests that the singer's silence contributes to the distance and disconnect they feel in their relationships.
Line by Line Meaning
We doubt with all our heart
We have deep uncertainty and lack of faith
And regret the things we did
We feel remorse for our past actions
Everything is said and done
All matters have been concluded and settled
We pretend to be alone
We feign solitude despite our inner emotions
Can we avoid the next step we do
Is it possible to prevent our forthcoming actions
Can we feel without even trying
Can emotions arise effortlessly within us
Can we whisper when we scream
Is it feasible to communicate softly amidst chaos
Is it my silence that you bring to me
Does my quietness invoke a particular response from you
What I can say to you
The words I can express to you
Will never change a thought
Will never alter a single mindset
I whisper my good-bye to turn my back on you
I quietly bid farewell and distance myself from you
In endless speeches day by day
Through countless verbal exchanges on a daily basis
We promise every word we say
We pledge earnestly with each statement we make
We trust the ones we know
We have confidence in those we are familiar with
To reject who need us most
To dismiss those who require our support the most
Too blind to see the grey
Unaware of the nuances and complexities
That you carry in your eyes
That are present within your gaze
