A Girl Worth Fighting For
Disney/Disney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For a long time we've been marching off to battle
In our thundering herd we feel a lot like cattle
Like the pounding beat our aching feet aren't easy to ignore
Hey, think of instead
A girl worth fighting for
(Huh?) That's what I said
A girl worth fighting for
I want her paler than the moon
With eyes that shine like stars
My girl will marvel at my strength
Adore my battle scars
I couldn't care less what she'll wear
Or what she looks like
It all depends on what she cooks like
Beef, pork, chicken, mmh

Bet the local girls thought you were quite the charmer
And I'll bet the ladies love a man in armor
You can guess what we have missed the most
Since we went off to war
What do we want?
A girl worth fighting for

My girl will think I have no faults
That I'm a major find
Uh, how 'bout a girl who's got a brain
Who always speaks her mind? (Nah)
My manly ways and turn of phrase
Are sure to thrill her
He thinks he's such a lady killer, huh

I've a girl back home who's unlike any other
Yet the only girl who'd love him is his mother
But when we come home in victory they'll line up at the door
What do we want?
A girl worth fighting for
Wish that I had

A girl worth fighting for
A girl worth fighting

Overall Meaning

The song "A Girl Worth Fighting For" from Disney's Mulan explores the thoughts and desires of soldiers who have been marching and fighting in battle for a long time. They express their longing for a meaningful relationship and companionship, yearning for a girl who is worth the struggles and sacrifices they have faced.

The soldiers feel like they have been treated as mere cattle in their military service, and they yearn for something more fulfilling. They imagine a girl who is pale like the moon and has eyes that shine like stars. While they mention that they want their girl to marvel at their strength and battle scars, they also emphasize that they are looking for someone who values them for who they are rather than just their appearance. They want a connection that goes beyond physical attraction.

The soldiers also express their frustration with the lack of depth in the women they encounter. They desire a girl who has a brain and always speaks her mind. They mock one of their comrades' belief that he is a "lady killer," highlighting their preference for authenticity and intelligence over superficial charm.

The chorus of the song repeats the desire for a girl worth fighting for, emphasizing how important it is for them to find someone who will make their struggles worthwhile. They believe that when they return home in victory, there will be girls lining up at the door, symbolizing the recognition and admiration they hope to receive.

Most people here probably don't realize how deep this song actually becomes at the end if you watch the movie to understand the context. The men here are singing about โ€œa girl worth fighting forโ€ which is the woman they dream to have as a wife. However at the end, they stop singing to find the burned village and finds a doll. There they start to wake up to reality and see how war really affects the people. And then they truly fight for a girl worth fighting for, the innocent children.

It's also the end of the fun singing for the rest of the movie, they took it seriously from then on

Kyra

Wow thatโ€™s so deep! I hope itโ€™s a realization many can actually genuinely live in time

Just Bautista

still can't believe all these great songs weren't in the live action version

Hoshimiya !

Live action mulan didnโ€™t have the magic og did

Emma4

It's better this way. If they had sang all this magic songs in the live action they would have ruined them

Macaroni and Cliches

@Hoshimiya ! there was so much magic in the live action version, they just removed how the characters felt about everything

Astrology M

that live action movie was not made as a version of this one. It had nothing to do with this movie.

Astrology M

@Hoshimiya ! thatยดs because that movie was not a replica to this one or a live action related to this movie. It was an independent one
