God Help the Outcasts
Disney (Hunchback of Notre Dame) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know if you can hear me
Or if you're even there
I don't know if you would listen
To a gypsy's prayer

Yes I know I'm just an outcast
I shouldn't speak to you
Still I see your face and wonder
Were you once an outcast too

God help the outcasts
Hungry from birth
Show them the mercy
They don't find on earth

God help my people
We look to you still
God help the outcasts
Or nobody will

(I ask for wealth, I ask for fame
I ask for glory to shine on my name)

(I ask for love I can't possess
I ask for God and his angels
To bless me)

I ask for nothing
I can get by
But I know so many
Less lucky than I

Please help my people
The poor and down trod
I thought we all were
The children of God

God help the outcasts

Children of
God

Overall Meaning

The song "God Help the Outcasts" is a powerful and emotional ballad sung by Esmeralda in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. The lyrics convey her desperation and heartfelt plea to God for help, as an outcast herself, she is aware of the suffering of others who have been neglected and forgotten by society. Esmeralda's lack of confidence in her abilities to connect with God is palpable as she starts to question her worthiness and eligibility to ask for divine intervention. Her vulnerability and sincerity in her tone demonstrate a need to be seen and heard, both by humans and the divine power.

The lyrics then turn towards empathy for the plight of the outcasts, the hungry and those who never seem to find mercy on this earth. Esmeralda's conviction to help her people is commendable, and her request for divine intervention, a call to action on everyone's part. She acknowledges the limitations of herself and other humans, highlighting the significance of turning to God for hope and support. Her final sentiment about all people being children of God emphasizes the need for unity and love in the face of adversity.

@Free.Spirit.Rebel.

This song is true and powerful.
I can imagine how others struggle with being different.

God loves us all, his children, no matter what our differences are;
Lifestyles
Appearances
Personalities.
Backgrounds

I love. All. My fellow humans no matter what.

Esmeralda: I wonder if you were once an outcast too?
Jesus: Oh honey.......

@callmema14

People often forget this though.

@yeetusthefetusandpressdeleteus

Whyd i laugh so hard-

@katziliaf

I mean, didn't she ask a Maria statue?
Not Jesus?

@martimtorres9093

@katziliaf both we’re, but she asks to God to help the outcast since he is the only one who has that power. The statue was of both Maria and Jesus.

@katziliaf

@Martim Torres Yes I saw that. Though, if God has all the power, it makes question why people pray to Maria and Jesus in the first place. Especially Jesus. Dude basically made it clear that we were all God's kids and he was just there to spread the message, but oh well

I don’t know how someone can say this movie is anti-Catholic when you have this gorgeous sequence that cuts at the heart of what Christianity is all about and why many have faltered from God’s path along the way.

@cloud2451

Anti corrupted church maybe, not anti catholic. I guess some viewed it that way because it calls out the bad sides of the church

@DeidresStuff

I had someone tell me that as a Catholic, I shouldn't have read the Handmaid's Tale. Catholics were one of the groups of people being persecuted by the leaders of Gilead. A lot of people are very stupid.

@Cloud ♡ people often find it hard to accept constructive criticism of their group
