A Home
Dixie Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I mistook the warnings for wisdom
from so-called friends quick to advise
though your touch was telling me otherwise
Somehow I saw you as a weakness
I thought I had to be strong
Oh but I was just young I was scared
I was wrong
Not a night goes by
I don't dream of wandering through the home that might have been
I listened to my pride when my heart cried out for you
Now everyday I wake again
In a house that might've been
A home

Guess I did
What I did believing
that love is a dangerous thing
Oh but that couldn't hurt anymore
than never knowing

Not a night goes by
I don't dream of wandering
through the home that might have been
I listened to my pride
when my heart cried out for you
Now everyday I wake again
In a house that might've been
A home
A home.....

four walls, a roof, a door, some windows
just a place to run when my workin day is through
they say home is where the heart is
if the exception proves the rule I guess that's true

Not a night goes by
I don't dream of wandering
through the home that might have been
I listened to my pride
When my heart cried out for you
now everyday I wake again

In a house that might've been
A home a home

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dixie Chicks' song A Home are about regret for not following one's heart and missing out on a chance to be with someone they truly loved. The singer of the song admits that they mistook warnings from friends for wisdom and believed that loving someone was a weakness. In reality, they were just young and scared, and by not following their heart, they missed the opportunity to create a home with the person that they loved. The song expresses the longing for what might have been and the regret for not taking a chance on love.

The lyrics of A Home have universal appeal as many people have experienced similar situations in their lives where they too have shied away from taking a chance on love due to fear or societal pressure. The song is a reminder that the heart wants what it wants and that sometimes, ignoring it can lead to a lifetime of regret. The chorus, "Not a night goes by, I don't dream of wandering through the home that might have been," is particularly poignant as it reflects the persistent nature of regret that lingers even after many years.

Absolutely. This might be the best all girl band that ever graced a stage. I know zero about country music. Been a rock guy all my life but these women are so talented that their art breaks through all barriers. I had never heard of them till this album came out as I was at a friends house and we watched the live show at the Kodak Center in Hollywood. They played this entire album cover to cover then played some old favorites. I was mesmerized. Still am.

@@blackmarriagemovement1812 I’ll tell you what, I’ve now seen several live performances of theirs on dvd or on the web and you see people from all colors, backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses,; just everybody seems to recognize their sheer talent. Thank you for commenting!

Peter Hinkle Yeah they’re the TRUTH! Real recognize real! Talent is talent. And they are DOPE!!!

I played country for 3 years full-time as a working bass player, and as a guitar player before that. I've been in love with this band for a long time. These girls have proven many times over that they have hit-making capability...it goes without saying. Maybe they can out-live the animosity from the UK debacle. Time will tell.
