The trio is currently ranked as the highest-selling female musical group in the USA, according to RIAA Gold & Platinum album certifications. As of 2012, The Chicks had won 13 Grammy Awards. While The Chicks continues, Maguire and Robison are writing and recording as Court Yard Hounds as of Feb 2010. The Dixie Chicks renamed the band in 2020 to The Chicks dropping Dixie from the official name as the name had the word 'Dixie' referencing the American MasonβDixon line, which separated the free and slave-owning southern states.
Robin Lynn Macy was an original bandmember, as was Laura Lynch. Macy left the group in 1992, while Lynch was replaced by Natalie Maines in 1995.
The group aroused considerable controversy for publicly denouncing President George W. Bush and the imminent invasion of Iraq during the European leg of their Top of the World tour supporting Home. Many country music stations immediately pulled their music from the air, and the band received criticism from many corners of the media.

I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of blue bonnets
In a blanket made of stars
Oh, it sounds good to me
I said, cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you
I wanna walk and not run
I wanna skip and not fall
I wanna look at the horizon and not see a building standing tall
I wanna be the only one for miles and miles
Except for maybe you and your simple smile
Oh, it sounds good to me
Yes, it sounds so good to me
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you
I said, I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
Oh, it sounds so good to me
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue
Set me free, oh, I pray
Closer to heaven above and closer to you
Closer to you
Closer to you
Cowboy take me away
Closer to you
The lyrics of Cowboy Take Me Away are about wanting to escape the modern world and all its complications, and to be taken somewhere more natural and simple. The singer longs to touch the earth, to grow something wild and unruly, and to sleep on the hard ground. Yet she also wants to be held in the arms of her lover and to feel the comfort of blue bonnets and a blanket made of stars. The use of the word "cowboy" evokes a sense of freedom and adventure, and the idea of being flown high into the wild blue sky suggests a desire to escape the limitations of everyday life and connect with something bigger and more beautiful.
The chorus repeats the phrase "Closer to you" several times, emphasizing the desire for intimacy and connection with a loved one. The singer wants to be set free and brought closer to heaven, both metaphorically and perhaps even physically, as the soaring melody and emotional delivery of the words suggest a sense of being lifted up and carried away.
Overall, the song is a powerful expression of longing for escape, freedom, and connection, set to a beautiful and uplifting melody that perfectly captures the sense of soaring through the open sky.

When I was a little boy growing up in Gillette Wyoming, this song came on the radio in our garage late one night when me and my mom were painting, i grabbed my mom and slow danced with her to this song and it brought her to tears. One of my best childhood memories β₯ Sadly she is no longer with us, she passed unexpectedly in 2021 and this was the song I played for her.
