Hello Mr. Heartache
Dixie Chicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hello Mr. Heartache, I've been expecting you
Come in and wear your welcome out
The way you always do
You never say if you're here to stay
Or only passin' through
So hello Mr. Heartache,
I've been expecting you
When I don't feel like company
You make yourself at home
Even though you know
I'd rather be alone
Love walked out on me
And didn't even close the door
Next thing I know I'm starin'
At your shadow on the floor

So, hello Mr. Heartache,
I've been expecting you
Come in and
wear your welcome out
The way you always do
You never say if you're here to stay
Or only passin' through
So hello Mr. Heartache,
I've been expecting you

I wish I could say it's nice
To see you back again
We're not exactly strangers
But we're not exactly friends
You know you're not invited but
You keep on comin' round
The last thing that I need is you
To kick me when I'm down

So, hello Mr. Heartache,
I've been expecting you
Come in and
wear your welcome out
The way you always do
You never say if you're here to stay
Or only passin' through
So hello Mr. Heartache,
I've been expecting you

I've been expecting you

I've been expecting you
I've been expecting you

Overall Meaning

The Dixie Chicks’ "Hello Mr. Heartache" is a song about a troubled relationship. The lyrics kick off by saying, "Hello Mr. Heartache, I’ve been expecting you." This line expresses the idea that pain and heartache are constant companions in the singer’s life. The song’s protagonist welcomes the heartache and invites it in, making it clear that it is neither new nor unwanted in her life.

The song is about a familiar nemesis, a man who has caused pain in the past, and the lyrics refer to him as Mr. Heartache. The way the singer refers to him suggests that he’s not someone new, but rather someone who’s caused her pain before. She also implies that Mr. Heartache is a frequent visitor in her life. She never says whether he’s staying or leaving, which could indicate her uncertainty about the future of her relationship with him.

The singer’s repeated refrain of "I’ve been expecting you" emphasizes her lack of control over these recurring heartaches. She’s resigned to the fact that Mr. Heartache will always be around, even when she doesn't want him to be. The song captures the sense of inevitability that comes with heartbreak and the idea that sometimes we can’t control the forces that break us.

This is my favorite song on the fly cd. That whole CD rates are 5 star's. I love it I bet me and my wife could cut a fat rug and people would stop dancing and watch us. My mom and dad were the same way. When you get a dancing partner like that you just got it.
