Coats of Many Colors
Dolly Parton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Back through the years
I go wonderin' once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
Every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
Momma sewed the rags together
Sewin' every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a story
From the Bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss

My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
And holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
My momma made for me

And oh I couldn't understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told 'em of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told 'em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

But they didn't understand it
And I tried to make them see
That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors

My momma made for me
Made just for me

Overall Meaning

Dolly Parton’s song “Coat Of Many Colors” is a deeply personal and introspective reflection on her upbringing and the powerful role her mother played in her life. The lyrics transport the listener back through time to the seasons of Dolly’s youth, recalling a box of rags her family received from a stranger. Her mother, unable to buy her a coat, sewed the rags together with love and made her a coat of many colors, which Dolly was so proud of. The coat was a symbol of the family’s resilience and resourcefulness, even in their poverty. Her mother’s story about Joseph and his coat of many colors from the Bible further imbued the garment with meaning, making it a source of pride and self-worth for Dolly.

As she joyfully wore it to school, the other children mocked and teased her, but Dolly remained firmly rooted in her sense of self-worth, valuing the love and care that went into the making of the coat more highly than any fancy clothes or material possessions. The song is ultimately a tribute to the strength and love of Dolly’s mother and to the power of family and community to provide a sense of belonging and purpose, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

This song always reminds me of my mama, RIP. I’m 62 now but grew up poor working class (cotton mills) and Mama made all my clothes until I went off to college and even then she still made clothes for my sister and me. She was a talented seamstress but I vividly remember being embarrassed as a young teen that I had to wear homemade clothes while others wore clothes bought from department stores. I’m so grateful that I realized as a young adult all the sacrifices she made for my sister and me and was able to express my gratitude to her. RIP Billie Hunter…you were the best mama ever
