My story isn't one of faith, it's one of doubt and shame,
I did not have faith, I was doubtful and ashamed

And the cowardice the fear of men will bring;
Fear of men made me cowardly

Through all His tribulations, I never dared to take a stand,
I did not stand up for Jesus during times of tribulation

Though all the while I knew He was the King.
I knew Jesus was the King all along

Almost all the others on the Council had agreed,
Most members of the Council agreed

But I thought that all their threats were only talk.
I thought their threats were not serious

‘Til they began to speak of murder, and in the end I had to leave,
I had to leave when they started talking about murder

When they asked me which disciples could be bought.
They asked me which disciples could be bribed

Early in the mornin’, I was wakened by the shouts
I was woken up by shouting early in the morning

When a man ran through the courtyard down below
A man ran through the courtyard below me

In a panic shouting, Jesus had been taken, the Council's been convened
The man was shouting that Jesus had been taken and the Council had convened

And they're going to try to kill Him now I know.
They were planning to kill Him

No one who'd been seen with Him, even knew about that trial;
No one who was with Him knew about the trial

When I arrived there was just an empty hall.
When I arrived, the hall was empty

When I finally found them, I could not believe my eyes –
I was surprised when I found them

He was being scourged before them all.
He was being whipped in front of everyone

The crowd cried out for murder, but He never made a sound
The crowd called for murder but Jesus was silent

And at last they led Him back inside the door
They took Him back inside

When Pilate brought Him out again, and said "Behold The Man",
Pilate brought Him out and said "Behold The Man"

I couldn't hold the tears back anymore.
I started crying

He bore no resemblence to the one I used to know
He did not look like the Jesus I knew

From His face you couldn't tell He was a man –
His face did not appear human

From the beatings and the lashing, and the thorns upon His head,
He was beaten, whipped, and had thorns on His head

He stumbled and He almost couldn't stand.
He stumbled and almost fell down

Pilate wanted to release Him, but the crowd just screamed and roared,
Pilate wanted to free Jesus, but the crowd protested loudly

Until at last, he let them have their way,
Eventually, Pilate gave in

And they took Him out to Golgotha, and I followed far behind,
They took Him to Golgotha and I followed from a distance

Afraid to look and afraid to turn away.
I was scared to look at what was happening

Slowly I drew closer, till the light began to dim,
I moved closer until it started to get darker

And a sudden silence spread across the land,
There was a sudden silence everywhere

And at noon, it grew like midnight, as if no one were allowed
At noon, it was dark as if it were midnight

To witness what was happening to this Man.
To witness what was happening to Jesus

"My God, My God, what have I done to turn your back on me?"
Jesus said, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?"

His scream of anguish echoed down the hill,
His scream of pain echoed across the hill

And it seemed I heard the misery, the sickness and the sin
It seemed like I heard the suffering, sickness, and sin of all men

Of every man who ever lived or ever will.
Of every person who had ever lived or would ever live

In agony, He raised Himself and He pulled against the nails
Jesus raised Himself in pain and moved against the nails

Just enough to fill His lungs for one more cry,
Just enough to take one more breath to cry out

"It is finished! Father, unto You I now commit my life!"
Jesus said, "It is finished! Father, I commit my spirit to You!"

And He breathed His last, and He bowed His head, and He died.
Jesus took His last breath, bowed His head, and died

Before the sun had set, we took His body from the cross,
We took His body down from the cross before sunset

And washed it of the gore of all His wounds.
We washed His body of all the blood from His wounds

And we wrapped Him in the linen, and the spices that we'd brought,
We wrapped Him in linen and the spices we had brought

Then we rolled the stone across the tomb.
We rolled a stone over the entrance of the tomb

At first it was the women, then Peter said so, too,
First, the women said He was alive, then Peter confirmed it

Then two more came from Emmaus in the night,
Later, two more people came from Emmaus and confirmed it was true

And then He Himself was standing there and His glory filled the room,
Then, Jesus appeared and His glory filled the room

And the darkness in my soul was filled with light.
My heart was filled with joy

When He turned to me, it seemed the others disappeared,
When Jesus turned to me, it felt like everyone else disappeared

Then He touched me and I saw His hands and side;
Jesus touched me and I saw His hands and side

And the words He spoke to me alone drove all my fears away,
Jesus' words to me drove away all my fears

And lit a fire that's burning deep inside.
Jesus' words lit a fire deep inside me

Then He told us all, as God sent Me, I am sending you,
Jesus told us that God had sent Him, and He was sending us

To destroy the work of Satan and to preach;
Our mission was to defeat Satan and spread the gospel

Preach deliverance to the captive and the gospel to the poor,
We were to preach freedom for those enslaved and share the gospel with the poor

That heaven has come down within their reach.
Heaven is within their grasp

So now as He's commanded, I am here before you all,
I am here before you as Jesus commanded

With a courage that I know is not my own,
I act with courage that comes from Jesus

To tell you that He's risen, Jesus is the Lord;
I am here to tell you that Jesus has risen and He is Lord

And salvation now is in His name alone.
Salvation is found only in Jesus' name

Jesus is risen, the battle is done,
Jesus has risen and the battle is finished

Yield to His Spirit, worship the Son,
Submit to the Holy Spirit and worship Jesus

Take His forgiveness, let healing start,
Accept His forgiveness and let the healing begin

Jesus is Lord now, open your heart.
