Everybody Knows
Don Henley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, and the rich get rich
That's how it goes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows the boat is leaking
Everybody knows the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died
Everybody talkin' into their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stemmed rose
And everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discrete
There were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
But everybody knows

Everybody knows that it's now or never
Everybody knows that it's me or you
Everybody knows that you live forever
When you've done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Oh, black Joe still pickin' cotton
For your ribbons and bows
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows it moving fast
Everybody knows that's the naked man and woman
Just a shining artifact of the past
And everybody knows that the scene is dead
But there's gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

Everybody knows that you're in trouble
Everybody knows what you've been through
From the bloody cross on top of Calvary
To the beach at Malibu
Everybody knows it's coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows
That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows
Everybody knows

That's how it goes
Everybody knows

Overall Meaning

The song “Everybody Knows” by Don Henley is a poignant commentary on the corruption and decay in society. The opening verse highlights the feeling of powerlessness, as everyone knows the game is rigged against them, so they roll the dice hoping for the best, but with their fingers crossed, knowing the outcome is already set. Everyone knows that the war is over, but the good guys lost, and that the fight was fixed where the poor stay poor, and the rich get richer. In this sense, the songs address societal inequalities driven by the corrupt systems.

The second verse deals with a personal loss experienced by everyone. The “broken feeling” that one gets when their father or dog dies, which appeals to the collective idea that everyone has experienced the pain of loss. It highlights the sense of despair and hopelessness people have when confronted with death. The repetition of “everybody” creates a sense of shared experiences that brings people together.

The third verse addresses hedonistic behavior as a means of distracting oneself from the harsh realities of life. It talks of how everybody talks into their pockets, everybody wants a box of chocolates, champagne, and a long-stemmed rose. The final verse deals with the inevitability of destruction and foreboding. The verse deals with the idea that everyone knows that the plague is coming, the scene is dead, and it’s all coming apart. It’s a bleak and pessimistic outlook on the world, as Henley refers to the “sacred heart” before it blows.
