Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jones' upbringing was rough. He struggled between wanting to be a musician and to be a member of a street gang. After a brush with death, Jones left the gang and focused on a music career forming the group Porscha. However, Jones was gaining notice as a writer penning songs for established R&B acts such as Usher, producing the singer's 1995 hit, "Think of You", 702's "Get It Together" and also wrote for groups such as Brownstone and Silk.
In 1996, he signed with LaFace Records and released his debut album, My Heart, which included his hit cover of Stevie Wonder's 1976 ballad "Knocks Me Off My Feet". It wasn't until 1999 however that Jones began to establish himself as a R&B hit maker with the album, Where I Wanna Be. The album yielded the number-one hits such as "U Know What's Up", which featured TLC member Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes and the title track. Other hits included "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)" and "This Luv".
In 2002, Jones released the gold-selling Life Goes On album, which featured the hits, "You Know That I Love You" and "Put Me Down" featuring Styles P.. Four years later, he released his fourth album, Journey of a Gemini, which featured the Tim & Bob hit, "I'm Gonna Be", which became a big hit on Urban AC. Jones is currently writing songs for Usher, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey on their upcoming albums.

Man
What am I say this time
She already heard the one about staying at work late
I already gave her the script about hanging out with the boys
Huh, guess I messed up this time
I'll face the music
After giving you everything in the world
Like a brand new Benz, a laced out crib
A pocket full of dough and your baby got milk
Girl why you're trippin', 'cause I stayed out late at night
But I locked my keys in my car
After getting off work, I didn't think to call
If innocent is my plea
Then why can't you trust in me
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to the question could be the end
I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to your questions could be the end
So you think I've been cheating, yeah
Even though we've been through this type of shit before
But I told you then, that I changed my ways
Baby, believe me 'cause I'm not guilty
Don't let this tear us apart
'cause I don't want to lose your love
Girl, I promise you it won't happen again
You can trust in me, just don't let this end
Girl, I'm innocent
If innocent is my plea
Then why can't you trust in me
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to the question could be the end
I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to your questions could be the end
Oh yes, said I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
Baby girl, I'm innocent
Guilty for trying to change
Baby, don't walk away
Girl, I'm innocent
Guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
Baby girl, I'm innocent
Guilty for trying to change
Baby, don't walk away
Girl, I'm innocent
If innocent is my plea
Then why can't you trust in me
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to the question could be the end
I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to your questions could be the end
If innocent is my plea
Then why can't you trust in me
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to the question could be the end
I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to your questions could be the end
If innocent is my plea
Then why can't you trust in me
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to the question could be the end
I'm guilty for loving you
And that's all I got to prove
You don't want to know where I've been
The answer to your questions could be the end
The lyrics of Donell Jones's song "Guilty By Suspicion" narrate the story of a man who is trying to convince his partner that he has not been cheating on her, despite her suspicion. The man claims that he has given his partner everything that she could ask for, including a luxurious lifestyle, expensive cars, a beautiful mansion, and financial stability. However, his partner is not content and accuses him of staying out late at night and not being honest with her. The man tries to explain that he was locked out of his car after work and did not call her, leading her to believe that he was being unfaithful. Despite reassuring her that he has changed his ways and promising that it won't happen again, his partner doesn't fully trust him.
The lyrics are a plea for forgiveness and trust between the two partners. The man admits to being "guilty for loving" his partner and that's all he has to prove to her. He believes that their relationship is worth saving, and he doesn't want to lose her love. The chorus repeats the lines "If innocent is my plea then why can't you trust in me?" and "I'm guilty for loving you, and that's all I got to prove." The lyrics ultimately communicate the importance of honesty, trust, and communication in a relationship.
