Born in Chicago, Illinois, Jones' upbringing was rough. He struggled between wanting to be a musician and to be a member of a street gang. After a brush with death, Jones left the gang and focused on a music career forming the group Porscha. However, Jones was gaining notice as a writer penning songs for established R&B acts such as Usher, producing the singer's 1995 hit, "Think of You", 702's "Get It Together" and also wrote for groups such as Brownstone and Silk.
In 1996, he signed with LaFace Records and released his debut album, My Heart, which included his hit cover of Stevie Wonder's 1976 ballad "Knocks Me Off My Feet". It wasn't until 1999 however that Jones began to establish himself as a R&B hit maker with the album, Where I Wanna Be. The album yielded the number-one hits such as "U Know What's Up", which featured TLC member Lisa "Left-Eye" Lopes and the title track. Other hits included "Shorty (Got Her Eyes on Me)" and "This Luv".
In 2002, Jones released the gold-selling Life Goes On album, which featured the hits, "You Know That I Love You" and "Put Me Down" featuring Styles P.. Four years later, he released his fourth album, Journey of a Gemini, which featured the Tim & Bob hit, "I'm Gonna Be", which became a big hit on Urban AC. Jones is currently writing songs for Usher, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey on their upcoming albums.

Donell Jones Lyrics

Why you want to play around with my heart
You make me feel like you care
Why you want to play around with my heart
My love was there i thought that you cared
Until that day you turned and walked away
Your love was special to me
That you're the one to blame
You said the love would never change
Then you go out and play
[Chorus]
I never knew that you could put me through
All the pain tha i feel, yeah
Saying sorry won't make it right
'Cause it will never be the same you're the one to blame
Tell me why
Tell me why you're living a lie
You never really loved me, baby
And now my heart is falling apart
You should have told me from the start
That you would break my heart, baby
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Donell Jones's song My Heart describe the pain and heartbreak resulting from a failed relationship. The singer is questioning why their partner played around with their heart and made them believe that they cared. The chorus repeats the same message, indicating the depth of hurt and confusion that the singer is experiencing. The impact of the breakup is clear from the line "My heart has fallen apart," and the added emphasis that their former partner is the one to blame.
The lyrics then suggest that the singer never anticipated the level of pain and suffering that they would experience from this separation. The reference to being put through 'all the pain that I feel' expresses this feeling of being overwhelmed and hurt by the behavior of their partner. The lack of remorse or regret for their actions is highlighted in the lines "Saying sorry won't make it right." The realization dawns that their partner never loved them in the first place and was living a lie all along, causing the singer's heart to fall apart.
Overall, the lyrics to My Heart convey a sense of betrayal, heartbreak, and deep emotional pain. The singer questions the reasons behind the betrayal, and the lack of genuine love from their partner. The song is an emotional journey through the complexities of love gone wrong.
