Caledonia
Donna Taggart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know if you can see. The changes that have come over me.
These last few days i've been afraid, that i might drift away.
I've been telling old stories, singing songs that make me think about where i've come from.
That's the reason why i seem so far away today.

Let me tell you that i love you.
That i think about you all the time.
Caledonia you're calling me now i'm going home.
But if i should become a stranger.
Know that it would make me more than sad.
Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.

Now i have moved and i've kept on moving.
Proved the points that i needed proving.
Lost the friends that i needed losing,
Found others on the way.
I've kissed the fellas and left them crying.
Stolen dreams, yes, there's no denying.
I've travelled hard sometimes with conscience flying, somewhere in the wind.

Let me tell you that i love you.
That i think about you all the time.
Caledonia you're calling me now i'm going home.
But if i should become a stanger.
Know that it would make me more than sad.
Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.

Now i'm sitting here before the fire.
The empty room, the forest choir.
The flames have cooled, don't get any higher,
They've withered now, they've gone.
But i'm steady thinking, my way is clear,
And i know what i will do tomorrow.
When hands have shaken, the kisses flowed,
Then i will disappear.

Let me tell you that i love you.
That i think about you all the time.
Caledonia you're calling me now i'm going home.
But if i should become a stranger.
Know that it would make me more than sad.
Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.

Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.

Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.
Caledonia's been everything i've ever had.

Overall Meaning

In Donna Taggart's song "Caledonia," the singer reflects on the changes they've gone through and the fear of drifting away from who they once were. They mention how they've been telling old stories and singing songs that remind them of where they come from. The singer declares their love for someone, possibly a romantic partner, a friend or family member, and how they think about them all the time. "Caledonia" is calling the singer back home, but they fear that if they become a stranger, it would make them more than sad because "Caledonia" has been everything they've ever had.

Throughout the song, the singer discusses how they've moved and kept on moving, proved points that they needed to prove, lost friends they needed to lose, and found others along the way. The singer has lived a life of passion, leaving people heartbroken and chasing their dreams. The singer now finds themselves sitting alone before the fire thinking about their future, knowing what they must do, and planning to disappear after goodbye kisses and handshakes. Overall, the song is about finding one's place in the world while maintaining ties to the past and the people who matter most.

Best female vocal of this song that I’ve heard. The blood of the Gunn flows through this American and your sweet voice has sent chills through me. Superb. Many blessings to you.

There are a number of truly superb female vocalists who do this Scottish folk ballad with verve and deep-seated emotion, but although I myself listen almost exclusively to female vocalists and covers, no one really does this like Doug or 'Let Her Go' like Passenger. The original artists often invest themselves in a work of art that cannot be imitated well, one basis for the concept of copyright. J

There is something special about the background in this one...,The whistle and the melody played just add to the beautiful voice.
