'tain't Me
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

`Tain't me baby gee I'm blue
`Tain't me that you sigh those tender sighs to
`Tain't me but I wish that it could be
`Tain't me that you tell those sweetest lies to
`Tain't me baby that's so plain to see
I'll remain just the same
Won't complain, kinda feel that I'm to blame
`Tain't me that your hungry heart cries out to
`Tain't me, maybe someday, could be me

Overall Meaning

In this Doris Day's song 'tain't Me, the singer is communicating the feelings of jealousy and unrequited love. The lyrics suggest that the one she is in love with is not interested in her and is instead in a relationship with someone else. She acknowledges that it's not her who is experiencing the romantic gestures from the person she loves, but she wishes it could be her. She feels that she is to blame and wishes that she could be the one who is the recipient of the sweetest lies and tender sighs. However, for now, she is resigned to the fact that it is not her, and she will remain the same and won't complain. She believes that someday, the person she loves might see her in a different light and might choose to be with her instead.

Overall, the song is about the experience of unrequited love, where the person you love is in love with someone else, and there is nothing you can do about it. Day's voice gives the song a melancholic and forlorn feeling, which matches the theme very well.

Les and crew really beat it out on this number, and Doris' reading is groovy! A favorite of my early 78 collection. Many thanks for posting!

Ah... that tenor saxophone solo, wonderful. Well, that goes for the whole performance, actually.

@Trombonology

I much prefer Doris' sides from her second stint with Les' orch. to those from her first. ... Then again, I suppose most people do -- do they not? This socko affair is one of my absolute favourite Brown-Day platters! The Eddie Heywood sextet record is the other great (and very different!) version of this cute number.

@swingman5635

I can't speak for most people, but I do indeed, agree that her mid-40's sides are superior to her previous stint with Les. I'll go so far as to say,legendary!
