A Foggy Day
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was a stranger in the city
Out of town were the people I knew
I had that feeling of self-pity
What to do? What to do? What to do?
The outlook was decidedly blue
But as I walked through the foggy streets alone
It turned out to be the luckiest day I've known
A foggy day in London Town
Had me low and had me down
I viewed the morning with alarm
The British Museum had lost its charm
How long, I wondered, could this thing last?
But the age of miracles hadn't passed,
For, suddenly, I saw you there

And through foggy London Town
The sun was shining everywhere.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Doris Day's "A Foggy Day" paint a vivid picture of a feeling that is often familiar when one is alone in a busy city. The singer of the song is feeling sorry for themselves due to the fact that they are alone in a city full of strangers. They wonder what they should do and are feeling quite blue. This sets the tone for the song's overall mood that is melancholy.

However, as the singer walks through the foggy streets alone, the luckiest day they've ever known unfolds. Suddenly, the sun starts shining brightly through the foggy London town, and everything seems full of life and excitement even though it's hard to see clearly. This serves as a metaphor for how one's personal "fog" can lift when they least expect it, and life can unexpectedly turn bright again even when everything feels hopeless.

Overall, the song is a song about hope and the power of chance encounters. It's about how sometimes the best things in life come not when we plan for them, but when we least expect them.
