After she began her career as a big band singer in 1939, her popularity increased with her first hit recording "Sentimental Journey" (1945). After leaving Les Brown & His Band of Renown to embark on a solo career, she recorded more than 650 songs from 1947 to 1967, which made her one of the most popular and acclaimed singers of the 20th century.

Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).

Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

I knew this from the Shirelle’s first, and I always thought the words were “i guess you might call me a party animal” then I Doris’s (the original) and realized what the correct words were.

According to his autobiography, Richard Adler got the idea for the title from his lawyer Sidney Cohn, based on the Shakespeare quote "all the world loves a lover", after Adler expressed concern over his then wife, Marion, and her threat to expose his romance with Sally Ann Howes.

''Everybody Loves A Lover'' was not featured in any film...by Doris Day or anyone else. It was co-written by Richard Adler and Robert Allen. With Jerry Ross, Adler had written the score for THE PAJAMA GAME. When he was working with Doris Day on the film, she told him she was looking for a novelty song to record. He and Allen wrote this shortly after he finished work on the film and sent it to her. GOOD MOVE!

The Columbus Mary Ann Brandt - a comic who puts on a costume of a woman acting total pretentious aura has lip sunched to this song as her Antham . A total send up sang in a very earnest way while she plays her hick character believing she’s royalty because her address in this Columbus ohio town is north of Lane avenue making it “ upper Arlington “ which was a big deal in the 50’s-80’s . I won’t name his real name but Mary Ann Brandt is a comic legend who sells out her seasonal shows for past 30 or more years . She ends her show with a spotlight on just her face lip synching to the first part of this song and when the lyric comes up “ I can’t help believe it’s not me” spotlight gets wider and she plays her air trombone as the trombone sound comes through on the song. It’s a case of “ you have to be there “ to appreciate her mock delivery presented in a serious way . His show is excellent and clever and totally original . I bet when Doris recorded this song she never imagined a clever comedian using it to present his humor . He’s raised so much money from the shows for great causes.
