Hey there
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey there, you with the stars in your eyes
Love never made a fool of you
You used to be too wise

Hey there, you on that high flying cloud
Though she won't throw a crumb to you
You think some day she'll come to you
Better forget her
Her with her nose in the air
She has dancing on a string
Break it and she won't care

Won't take this advice
I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear
Are you too much in love to hear

Is it all going in one ear
And out the other

Better forget her
Her with her nose in the air
She has you dancing on a string
Break it and she won't care

Won't you take this advice
I hand you like a brother
Or are you not seeing things too clear

Are you too much in love to hear
Is it all going in one ear and out the other

Overall Meaning

The song "Hey There" by Doris Day, tells the story of a man deeply in love and infatuated with a woman who does not feel the same way. He's holding onto hope that someday she'll come around and love him the way he loves her. The first verse tells us that this man has stars in his eyes, meaning he's deeply in love and blinded by his own emotions, but the woman he loves has never made a fool of him. The following verse establishes that he's still hopeful that one day, she will return his love, despite the fact that she won't even give him a crumb.

The following verse seems to show that the woman in question is aloof and indifferent towards the man's affections. She has him dancing on a string, meaning she's able to control him even though she doesn't love him. The woman's unfeeling treatment of the man is reinforced with the advice to forget her, indicating that she will never care for him even if he breaks free from her control. The last two lines seem to suggest that the man is not listening to the advice and might be too deeply in love to realize that the woman will never feel the same way about him.

In conclusion, "Hey There" is a song about the unrequited love of a man who is unable to let go of his feelings for a woman who does not share them. The song tries to tell him to forget about her, but he is too blinded by love to listen. It's a poignant and relatable story of love, loss, and heartbreak.

Most people forget that Doris began as a liltin' big band birdie. She always meant what she sang. A true, an honest artist, and a fine person.

If I ever get stuck in a 50's time warp, I hope I get to hang out with Doris; I always loved her.

I was in my high school choir several years ago, and for my final choir concert, we did the music for The Pajama Game. I still love the movie.

It's really a great scene - the movie is good too. She actually wasn't nominated for an Oscar for this, it was for Pillow Talk, but it should have been for this too. =) Thanks for commenting! =)
