I'll Never Smile Again
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll never smile again
Until I smile at you
I'll never laugh again
What good would it do?
For tears would fill my eyes
My heart would realize
That our romance is through
I'll never love again
I'm so in love with you
I'll never thrill again
To somebody new
Within my heart
I know I will never start

To smile again
Until I smile at you

Overall Meaning

In “I’ll Never Smile Again,” Doris Day sings about a love that has come to an end, leaving her unable to smile or laugh again without that person. She describes how tears would fill her eyes and her heart would realize that their romance is over if she were to try. She admits that she will never love again because she still loves the person who has left her. She will not feel the emotional thrill of being in love with somebody new because she is still in love with the person who has left her. Her heart is closing off to the possibility of opening up to new love. The ultimate image painted by these lyrics is that of a person incapacitated by grief and loss, unable to move on and start anew.

One of the interesting facts about “I’ll Never Smile Again” is that it was written by Ruth Lowe, who was inspired to write it after the tragic death of her husband in World War II. The song was originally performed by Tommy Dorsey and His Orchestra, with vocals by Frank Sinatra, and reached No. 1 on the charts in 1940. Doris Day later recorded her version of the song in 1959.
