Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

I Love the Way You Say Goodnight
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You say goodnight)
I kinda like the way
You mumble
While you fumble for the key
More time for kissing me
(I love the way
You say goodnight)
Linger with your finger
On the bell
More kisses
And they're swell
When you say
Gotta get home by twelve
I always say let's go
'Cuz you can take longer
To say good night
Than any three others I know
(Both)
I love the way
You say goodnight
I kinda like the way
You snuggle
While you juggle
With your comb
Mmmmmm
I'm never
Never, never going home
I love the way
(I kinda like the way)
You say
(The way you always say)
Goodnight
(The way you always
Whisper honey nighty night)
The way
You let our kisses mingle
'Til I tingle to my toes
(Giggle
We're blushing like a rose)
I love the way
(I kinda like the way
The extraordinary way)
You say good night
(The way you always say
Don't go just hold me tight)
I kinda like the way you giggle
While you jiggle with your bag
(Sign
Our heart's are playing tag)
When you say
(We just got to be home by twelve)
But don't I always say let's go
'Cause you take longer
To say good night
Than any three others I know
I love the way
(I kinda like the way) you say
(The super duper special way)
Goodnight
(The way you have me flying
Higher than a kite)
I kinda like the way
You snuggle
While you juggle
With your comb
(It looks as though
You're never going)
No I'm never
Never, never
Never, never
Never gonna go home
The song "I Love the Way You Say Goodnight" by Doris Day is a charming love song about the little quirks and habits of a loved one that endear them to the singer. The song starts by praising the way the loved one mumbles and fumbles for the key when saying goodnight. This gives the singer more time for kissing and affection. The song goes on to describe how the loved one lingers with their finger on the doorbell, creating an opportunity for more kisses. The singer then playfully teases the loved one for always saying they need to get home by twelve and taking longer to say goodnight than anyone else. The song ends with the singer declaring that they are never going home because they love the way their loved one says goodnight.
The lyrics in this song are full of playful, giddy energy and have a light-hearted feel throughout. It illustrates the beauty in appreciating the small things in a relationship, in this case, the endearing way of saying goodnight.
Overall, "I Love the Way You Say Goodnight" is a sweet and playful love song about appreciating the little things in a relationship. The upbeat melody and playful lyrics make it a memorable and charming tune.
