It's Magic
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You sigh, the song begins, you speak and I hear violins
It's magic
The stars desert the skies and rush to nestle in your eyes
It's magic
Without a golden wand or mystic charms
Fantastic things begin when I am in your arms

When we walk hand in hand, the world becomes a wonderland
It's magic
How else can I explain those rainbows when there is no rain
It's magic
Why do I tell me myself these things that happen are all really true

When in my heart I know the magic is my love for you
It's magic
It's magic

Why do I tell myself these things that happen are all really true
When in my heart I know the magic is my love for you

Overall Meaning

Doris Day's "It's Magic" tells the story of a love so strong that it creates a sense of enchantment and wonder for those involved. The song begins with the singer acknowledging the power of his partner's presence. Just hearing their voice triggers a sensory experience, he said. The violins he hears symbolize the romantic and passionate feelings he experiences in the presence of the one he loves. The lyrics paint a picture of how his loved one has uplifted his life, such that the stars in the sky seek refuge in his loved one's eyes.

Day's lyrics portray love as a kind of magic or mysticism that enlivens the world around them. The lover's world is seen as an enchanted land filled with rainbows without rain, a world of wonder where even the simplest of things are fantastic. He suggests that he doesn't need any mystical charms or illusions to create the magic; his partner's love is enough. When the couple walk hand in hand, the world becomes an enchanting fairyland.

From these lyrics, we can understand that the magic is something that exists within the singer and comes from or is inspired by their love for their partner. The love that is shared is so deep and sublime that it transforms everything around them, making the world seem a better place than it already is, creating an atmosphere of wonder and ecstasy.

My mom and dad always sang this to each other. Yesterday I played it for my 94 yr old mom and it was magic. She sang along word for word and we both stepped back in time for a moment. Dad died 5 years ago. Their love for each other was truly magic.

Good old fashioned love. Today's world hasn't a clue of what real love is unless it's on an app.

What great taste this young man has. He has many more years to enjoy lovely Doris as her music will live on forever. When I was his age I saw the film called The pajama game five times in one week a mere sixty years ago.
