It was initially reported that Mr. Bramhall may have died as a result of complications from pneumonia. One of his final North Texas performances was at 2011's Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival. He was scheduled to perform Nov. 26 at the Granada Theater, with support from Fort Worth's Quaker City Night Hawks.
As a boy, Doyle Bramhall would jam in the family garage with local children, including the future ZZ Top guitarists Billy Gibbons (lead), and Dusty Hill (bass). While in high school, Bramhall joined The Chessmen with Jimmie Vaughan. The group opened for Jimi Hendrix when Hendrix played Dallas.
In 1969, Bramhall moved to Austin and formed Texas Storm with Jimmie Vaughan. In the 1970s, Bramhall formed The Nightcrawlers with Marc Benno, which also included Jimmie Vaughan's younger brother Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitar. While in The Nightcrawlers, Bramhall co-wrote the tune "Dirty Pool," which appeared on Stevie Ray Vaughan's debut album, Texas Flood. He would write or co-write several other songs for the younger Vaughan, such as "Life By The Drop" from SRV's The Sky Is Crying album, and he played the drums on the Vaughan Brothers first and final album, Family Style.
Bramhall released his debut solo record in 1994, which included appearances from the Vaughans and his own son, Doyle Bramhall II. He also collaborated with Jennifer Warnes in the 1990s. In the 2000s, he signed with Yep Roc Records and has released two albums on that record label. Bramhall's album Is It News was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2008 in the genre of best contemporary blues album.
Other Side of Love
Doyle Bramhall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Our love is going down the drain
It's too bad
Our love is going down the drain
If I have to live without you baby
I'd rather spend the rest of my life standing out in the rain
We've made love
We've made our love
Under the stars and the full moon light
I Wish our days weren't numbered
That our time was going to be all right
I love to take the past
And re write the pages of pain
I love to take the past
And re write the pages of pain
I would give up anything woman
If we could live the good times over again
It's too bad
Our love is going down the drain
It's too bad
Our love is going down the drain
IF I have to live without you baby
I'd rather spend the rest of my life out in the rain
Doyle Bramhall's song "Other Side of Love" is about a relationship that is coming to an end. The lyrics express the sadness and regret of watching a love that was once strong fade away. The repetition of the phrase "it's too bad" highlights the frustration and helplessness of the situation. The singer would rather stand out in the rain for the rest of their life than live without their partner, which emphasizes the depth of their love.
The second verse recalls the happy times the couple shared, making the loss even more painful. The use of the imagery of stars and full moonlight highlights the romance of their relationship. However, the line "I wish our days weren't numbered" suggests that they knew their time together was limited, which is a reminder of the inevitability of their breakup.
The final verse shows the singer's desire to make things right and go back to when things were good. They long to "rewrite the pages of pain" and give up anything to have those good times again. The repetition of the chorus at the end drives home the fact that their love is truly over and that they will be left out in the rain without their partner.
