I Don't Want To Be Alone Tonight
Dr. Hook Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Your phone's gonna ring in the darkness of night
And you'll rise from the bed where you lay
And you'll answer "Hello" and from out of the past
A voice you once loved is gonna say

I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone
And I had to call someone who used to care
I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone
So say that you still want me and I'll be there

Maybe someday you'll lie there and look at the rain
Feeling afraid and alone
Feeling of hunger you just can't explain
And you'll be the voice on the phone

I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone
And I had to call someone who used to care
I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone
So say that you still want me and I'll be there

I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone

And I had to call someone who used to care
I don't wanna be alone tonight, I don't wanna be alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "I Don't Want to Be Alone Tonight" by Dr. Hook tell a story of loneliness and longing. The singer receives a call from someone from their past, someone they once loved. This person is feeling alone and needs someone to talk to. They express their desire to not be alone tonight and ask for reassurance that the singer still wants them. The song then shifts to a future scenario where the singer is the one feeling alone and hungry for companionship, calling on someone from their past for comfort.

The lyrics overall suggest a sense of vulnerability and dependence on past relationships for emotional support. The singer and the other person in the song seem to be stuck in a cycle of loneliness and reaching out to one another in search of comfort. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes this, with the line "I don't wanna be alone tonight" being repeated multiple times. The song's melancholic tone and bittersweet lyrics provide a poignant reflection on the complexities of love and longing.

It's May 30 2022. If you are listening to this song in 2040 I have no doubt been dead for years, but I enjoyed this song and many more of Dr. Hook's songs all of my life. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and we had awesome rock and roll music...slow, fast, ballads, etc., etc.... all types (including disco) and it was all great. So please enjoy all of the songs of the greatest time in all of history (1960's & 70's). I'll see you on the other side. Until then, as Marc Bolan from T- Rex would say, "Rock on".
