Kiss It Away
Dr. Hook the Medicine Show Lyrics

(Shel Silverstein)

There's a shadow on the sun I see it risin'
Kiss it away, kiss it away
And there's a hurt down deep inside that I been hidin'
Kiss it away, kiss it away
Now the hard times we been through
Oh babe we'd never mind them
We'd just kiss 'em away, we'd just kiss 'em away
And now I'm lookin' for the good times I can't find them
Must have kissed them away, guess we kissed them away

I keep thinkin' the sun will shine once more
I'm never ready for the sudden rain
Don't tell me I'm wrong, 'cause I've been told
I'm so wet and cold
Come kiss away my pain

You keep hopin' things'll change and I keep tryin'
One of these days, maybe one of these days
But there's a coldness in the air like somethin' dyin'
Kiss it away, kiss it away

Overall Meaning

In Dr. Hook's song "Kiss It Away," the singer sings about attempting to forget and move on from difficult times by "kissing them away." The first two lines of the song refer to a "shadow on the sun," which represents a negative feeling or event that is taking away from the happiness in the singer's life. Despite this, the singer suggests that they can "kiss it away," and rid themselves of the feeling. Similarly, the singer acknowledges that there is a "hurt down deep inside" that they have been trying to hide, but once again, believe that they can "kiss it away."

In the second verse, the singer talks about how they and their partner were able to overcome hard times by kissing them away. However, they now feel like they have lost those good times as well, almost as if they had kissed them away too. The chorus then repeats, with the singer pleading for their partner to help "kiss away" their pain, indicating a sense of powerlessness in dealing with their emotions on their own. The final verse suggests that there is something "dying" in the air, which could be interpreted as the end of the singer's relationship or the end to their hope for a better future. Despite this, they still believe that they can "kiss it away."

Overall, the song portrays a sense of yearning for an easier, more positive existence, and the belief that it is possible to "kiss away" difficult emotions and experiences. However, there is a sense of desperation in this desire, as the singer seems unable to achieve this solution on their own.

My opinion, Dennis Locorrrier's unique voice and talent is second to none, and that includes Elvis and Sinatra. Please spend some time listening to him on YouTube, and you will see what I am saying. I'm not talking about charisma or his stage presence or name recognition. But his beautiful voice and delivery. Dennis never misses a word or a note. Perfection

Sylvia's Mother made me buy my first Dr. Hook album but Kiss it Away, Judy, and Sing Me A Rainbow made me a fan for life. Dennis has maybe the best male voice of all time. 50 years later this still tears my heart out.

Keep on rocking my friend. Texas

I've produced all Dr Hook recordings including Kiss It Away....I was asked to add strings to Kiss It Away by Clive Davis at CBS back in 1969..My response was that on this particular song the image Dr Hook is portraying is either of a guy by himself in that much pain or a guy in a room full of string players...Shel Silverstein who wrote the song and was my closest friend said to me he was thrilled that I didn't give in to Clive....It wasn't the last time that happened in relation to Dr Hook....
