Five Oscar-winning actors have played Jekyll/Hyde:
March in 1932 (won his first one playing the duo)
Tracy in 1941
Jack Palance in 1968
Michael Caine in 1990
Russell Crowe in 2017 (in “The Mummy” with Tom Cruise)
You could probably add Kirk Douglas, who has a Lifetime Achievement Oscar. He was in a 1973 version.

What's amazing about Barrymore's first transformation was that it was done in a single take, with the actor merely contorting his body and facial expressions. Masterful pantomime.

@Gary Kass That's like the Three Stooges. Neither Curly, nor Ted Healy could stay away from the booze, and you know what happened to them?

@Voodoomaria Very interesting and informative. "Open secret" the way Cole Porter's homosexuality was. Thank you. If I'm not mistaken,Drew is focusing more on directing, producing, and her cosmetics line these days.

@Gary Kass They were more an "Open Secret" Lionel had a serious drinking problem, but it fortunately didn't prevent him from having a long and distinguished career. As for Ethel, who'd career was centered more on the boards than the silver screen, In that era, people tended to gloss over a woman's alcoholism, by excusing their incapacity as a "Delicate condition". I go along with everyone else, and praise Drew for being able to master herself, and get the help she needed. She has in the past shown the same talent and fire as her ancestors, I just wish SOMEONE would give her a role worthy of that talent, and move away from the "Fluff" she's been doing lately. She can do better, and I would love to know her name would be spoken with the same reverence reserved for John. She needs a role worthy of her talent, and a director who can pull that talent to the fore.

The original novel only hints at Hyde's appearance. He's described as a diminutive man but thoroughly repugnant and evil. He gives the impression of deformity without any visible outward signs of such a malady.

John Barrymore is definitely the most horrifying and creepy Mr Hyde.
