Four musicians from up North have come together in Los Angeles to form a band and share a dream. Canadians Doug Heffernan and Dan Nelles joined Oregonians Steve Giles and Paul Calder in the summer of 2003, and soon they had started writing and recording their own brand of powerful, hook-driven, modern rock music. By the early summer of 2004 their self-produced debut record Closest Line Theory was complete and ready for release. The dream had begun.
LIFE
Before the pieces were all in place, various members had crossed paths and worked together on previous projects. Doug (vocals and guitars) and Steve (bass and backing vocals) had been writing together for a while and had landed a record deal with major distribution in the late 90’s. When the label mishandled it’s financial backing and collapsed just two weeks after the bands record was released, everything fell apart. But the two held strong, worked up some new material and started all over again. When the time came to put together a new band, they realized they needed a 2nd guitarist to fill out their sound. Both had worked with Paul before and knew that he would be a perfect fit. In addition to locking in musically, Paul’s role as producer and engineer were also extremely key when the time came to record the bands debut record. As a world-class editor for prime time television and feature films, his digital editing skills were critical in capturing the definitive sound of DLM in the studio. The last piece of the puzzle was finding the right drummer. After jamming with several of LA’s best players, they finally came across Toronto import Dan Nelles and everything clicked. The chemistry between the four of them was immediate and with the lineup complete the music came roaring to life.
MISERY
Fully prepared for the long, grueling haul to the top, DLM has dedicated themselves to putting in the hard work it takes to achieve the success on their own terms. With the recording of Closest Line Theory complete, they are now prepared to take their huge, radio-friendly sound to the stages of Southern California and beyond. Their immediate sights are set on various regional markets along the West Coast from San Diego all the way up to Vancouver. “Everyone has miseries in their life,” says Heffernan. “we’ve taken any misery that may have come across our path, learned from it, and turned it into experience. This band is ready for anything.”

Up from an endless sea
Out of a cage like a freak in the movies
In from the long cold freeze
It came from out of nowhere,
I promise you it came from out of the blue
Right out of nowhere, like a gunshot straight to the head
Right out of nowhere
How could I know there was no way of knowing
So far from the world I am in
It felt kinda like a supernova implosion
Scarred like a stone from the wind
It came from out of nowhere,
I promise you it came from out of the blue
Right out of nowhere, like a gunshot straight to the head
Alive, bang you're dead
Right out of nowhere
Right out of nowhere
I've been blindsided many times
Found a way, thought I would never find
But this time I swear, thought you'd always be there
Surprise, surprise
It came from out of nowhere
I promise you it came from out of the blue
It came from out of nowhere
I promise you it came from out of the blue
It came from out of nowhere
I promise you it came from out of the blue
Like a gunshot straight to the head, alive bang your dead
Right out of nowhere
Right out of nowhere
Right out of nowhere
Nowhere

Nowhere
The lyrics of Dream Life Misery's song "Out of Nowhere" speak about the suddenness and unexpectedness of events that can completely change one's life. The opening line, "Down from the sky fell the rain like sadness" sets a somber tone for the rest of the song, as if the events that occurred were both inevitable and out of the blue. The singer describes feeling isolated from the world before the event and then being "blindsided" when it happened. The suddenness of the event is compared to a gunshot to the head, emphasizing its impact.
The lyrics also touch upon the singer's sense of loss and confusion, as they try to process what has happened to them. There's a sense of despair in lines like "It felt kinda like a supernova implosion" and "Scarred like a stone from the wind", as if the singer is struggling to come to terms with something that has left a mark on them. Finally, the lyrics end with the repetition of the phrase "Nowhere", emphasizing the sense of emptiness felt after such a sudden and life-altering event.
Overall, "Out of Nowhere" is a powerful song that captures the overwhelming emotions that come with sudden change. It speaks to the fear and confusion that can accompany such events, as well as the sense of loss that can linger long after they have occurred.
