Over the course of various lineup changes, Petrucci and Myung have been the only two constant members, and Portnoy remained with the band until 2010, when he left to pursue other musical endeavors and he has since been replaced by Mangini. After a brief stint with Chris Collins, followed by Charlie Dominici (who was dismissed from Dream Theater not long after the release of their first album), LaBrie was hired as the band's singer in 1991. Dream Theater's first keyboardist, Kevin Moore, left the band after three albums and was replaced by Derek Sherinian in 1995 after a period of touring. After just one album with Sherinian, they replaced him with current keyboardist Jordan Rudess in 1999.
To date, Dream Theater has released fifteen studio albums. The band's highest-selling release is their second album Images and Words (1992), which reached No. 61 on the Billboard 200 chart. Both the albums Awake (1994) and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) also entered the charts at No. 32 and No. 46, respectively, and received critical acclaim. Their fifth album, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999), was ranked number 95 on the October 2006 issue of Guitar World magazine's list of the greatest 100 guitar albums of all time. It was also ranked as the 15th Greatest Concept Album in March 2003 by Classic Rock Magazine.
As of 2018, Dream Theater has sold over 12 million records worldwide and has received three Grammy Award nominations (including one win in 2022). Along with Queensrÿche and Fates Warning, the band has been referred to as one of the "big three" of the progressive metal genre, responsible for its development and popularization.

She carried a gift from her home
The night shed a tear to tell her of fear
And of sorrow and pain
She'll never outgrow
Death is the first dance, eternal
There's no more freedom
Confined to this mind
I was told there's a miracle for each day that I try
I was told there's a new love
That's born for each one that has died
I was told there'd be no one to
Call on when I feel alone and afraid
I was told if you dream of the next world
You'll find yourself swimming in a lake of fire
As a child, I thought I could
Live without pain without sorrow
As a man I've found it's all caught up with me
I'm asleep yet I'm so afraid
Somewhere like a scene from a memory
There's a picture worth a thousand words
Eluding stares from faces before me
It hides away and will never be heard of again
Deceit is the second without end
The city's cold blood teaches us to survive
Just keep your heart in my eyes and we'll stay alive
The third arrives
Before the leaves have fallen
Before we lock the doors
There must be the third and last dance
This one will last forever
Metropolis watches and thoughtfully smiles
She's taken you to your home
It can only take a place
When the struggle between
Our children has ended
Now the miracle and the
Sleeper know that the third is love
Love is the dance of Eternity
The lyrics of Dream Theater's Metropolis are quite profound and multi-layered. They begin with the smile of dawn arriving in May, a symbol of new beginnings and hope. However, the night sheds a tear to warn of fear, sorrow, and pain that will never go away, as death is the first eternal dance. The singer is then told of miracles that can happen each day, and of new love that is born from death. Yet, there is also a suggestion of loneliness and fear in the absence of anyone to call on. The song then talks about the realization that pain and sorrow cannot be avoided in life, and how this insight makes the singer afraid even in sleep.
The next section of the song paints a vivid picture of a memory that is both elusive and deceptive. Even though the memory is worth a thousand words, it remains hidden away from others. The city's cold blood is said to teach survival skills, but the heart must be kept in someone's eyes to stay alive. The final dance is described as the one that will last forever and bring Metropolis to happiness. The lyrics end by saying that the struggle between children must end before the miracle and sleeper can understand that the third eternal dance is love. This final line is especially significant since it suggests that love is the only dance that can last forever.
