Best Friend
Drums (The) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're my best friend
But then you died
When I was 23 and you were 25

You're my best friend
But then you died
And how will I survive, survive
Survive, survive?
Oh how will I survive, survive
Survive, survive?

And every day I waited for you
And every day on the top of your car
Every day I waited for you
And every day on the hood of your car

I had a dream of you
You were drifting away
You were sad and the ocean dripped away

And I know, you're gonna be OK
'Cuz I can see in your eyes
Your eyes, your eyes, your eyes
Oh no no no, I wanna survive
Survive, survive, survive.

And every day I waited for you
And every day on the top of your car
Every day I waited for you
And every day on the hood of your car

And every day I waited for you
And every day on the top of your car

Every day I waited for you
And every day on the hood of your car

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Drums' song "Best Friend" are a heartfelt meditation on grief, loss, and the struggle to come to terms with the death of a loved one. The song is a tribute to the singer's best friend, who died when he was just 23 years old, leaving a gaping hole in his life. The opening lines of the song ("You're my best friend, but then you died / When I was 23 and you were 25") immediately set the tone for this intimate and deeply personal exploration of loss and mourning.

Throughout the song, the singer grapples with the overwhelming emotions that come with the sudden and unexpected loss of someone close to him. He sings of waiting for his friend every day, of dreaming of him drifting away, and of feeling like he is barely hanging on himself. In the chorus, he asks the haunting question "How will I survive?" repeatedly, struggling to find meaning and hope in the wake of such a devastating loss.

Overall, "Best Friend" is a raw and poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the pain that comes with losing someone you love. The song captures the isolating and all-consuming nature of grief, but it also suggests that, with time and patience, it is possible to find a path forward.

I'm a 54 year old guy. My brother (a few years younger) both love 80s stuff; Smiths, English Beat, various other stuff. I discovered The Drums on youtube and turned my brother on to them. On Thanksgiving a few years ago, I arrived at my sisters house, walked into her living room, and sang to my brother, "you're my best friend, but then you died...". my brother (a 300 lb. guy) stood up and did the Jonathan dance from this video. I laughed my ass off.
