Alabamy Home
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm goin' home
Down there among the fields of cotton,
Down where the folks have not forgotten me
I feel blue just for a little girl I'm strong for,
Just for a certain one I long to see.
I'm goin' down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME
I'm gonna see the bee that makes the honey comb
The brindle cow will wag her tail,
As I fill up the pail I'll chase the flies and
I surmise she'll moo, "Thanks to you.
"I'll feed the chicks, and mix some barley with their corn
They love it so, I know they'll cluck for luck each morn
Then I will lie amid the hay
And call it all a day
Way down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME.
I'm goin' down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME
I'm gonna see the bee that makes the honey comb
The brindle cow will wag her tail,
As I fill up the pail I'll chase the flies and
I surmise she'll moo, "Thanks to you.
"I'll feed the chicks, and mix some barley with their corn
They love it so, I know they'll cluck for luck each morn
Then I will lie amid the hay

And call it all a day
Way down aroun' my ALABAMY HOME.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Duke Ellington's Alabamy Home speak of a longing to return to a place where the singer feels a sense of belonging and familiarity. The singer is going back to Alabama, where fields of cotton stretch for miles, and the people there have not forgotten him. He feels blue for a little girl and is strong just for a certain one he longs to see. As he goes back home, he looks forward to seeing the bee that makes the honeycomb and the brindle cow that will wag her tail as he fills up the pail.

The singer takes care of the chicks and mixes some barley with their corn, knowing that they'll cluck for luck each morn. Then, he will lie amid the hay and call it all a day. The singer is yearning for a place that provides him with a sense of comfort, happiness, and purpose. He wants to return to a simpler time and a place where life was more straightforward. The song represents the longing that many people feel for their hometown, where they have roots and where their childhood memories lie.

Tower of terror brought me here, heard it while sitting outside the ride waiting for my family and ended up bopping my head up and down to the beat XD
