Blue Again
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue again
Blue again
And you know darn well
It's you again
You said last night
We were through again
And now, I'm blue again
I'm alone again
Alone again
I'm out around on my own again
There's a mockingbird that's flown again
And I'm alone again

Now baby, though I said I hate you
I love you more every day, babe
Though I aggravate you
All that I'm dying to say
Is that it's new again
You again
And we'll meet today at half past two again
And tonight, we'll fight

Again
And I'll be blue again

Overall Meaning

Duke Ellington’s song Blue Again tells a dialogue between two lovers who cannot seem to get their timing right. The lyrics depict a familiar pattern in romantic relationships, where one partner tries to cut ties while the other begs for one more chance. The repetition of “Blue again” suggests that the persona has experienced this before and is resigned to the recurring cycle that their on-again, off-again dynamic brings. The accompanying phrases, “And you know darn well it's you again” and “You said last night we were through again,” indicate the reasons for the persona’s current state of loneliness and nostalgia.

The persona tries to express frustration towards their lover but cannot hide the longing and love underneath it all. The persona admits to loving their partner more every day, even if they said that they hate them. They know that their relationship is not healthy, will lead to disagreements, and hurt but they cannot help but try again. The last line “And I'll be blue again” suggests that the persona knows what is coming and perhaps feels comfortable in the predictability of their relationship. The song is an accurate portrayal of people who keep going back to toxic relationships, even when they know the outcome.

The Marian Harris is wonderful, and she does full justice to Jimmy McHugh's imaginative bridge.

May the ballroom remain eternal!

We start with almost a stock arrangement and a very song plugger piano solo by the Duke. And that may be the worst vocal on an Ellington record. But, suddenly, after the vocal, the Ellington band appears in at least some of its glory.

Trombonology Erstwhile

Sid Garry's plodding vocal is absolutely dreadful -- not even in the same universe as Louis' on the contemporaneous Armstrong record -- but after that mess is over, we get the beautiful Ellington reeds and Cootie, and whole affair is powered by Fred Guy and Wellman Braud.

The Armstrong version is a masterpiece.

Top melody but i actually prefer the arrangement and vocal of the English Ambrose / Sam Browne of the following year .
