Could It Be You
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm so blue I don't know what to do
All day through I seem to say to you
I did wrong when I let you go away
'Cause now I dream about you night and day
I'm so unhappy and dissatisfied
I'll be happy if I had you by my side

If I could be with you one little hour tonight
And free to do all those little things I might
I want you to know you wouldn't go
Until I told you that I loved you so
If I could be with you, I'd love you long
If I could be with you, I'd love you strong

And I'm telling you for true you'd be anything but blue
If I could be with you

From an epochal collaboration, an LP of the COMBINED Basie and Ellington Bands, and the entire LP was recorded in ONE day.
The Personnel (and try to think of the enormity, to say nothing of the enormousness, of this):
Duke Ellington, Count Basie – piano (In stereo, the Count is on the left, the Duke is on the right)
Cat Anderson, Willie Cook, Eddie Mullens, Ray Nance, Sonny Cohn, Lennie Johnson, Thad Jones, Snooky Young - trumpet
Lou Blackburn, Lawrence Brown, Henry Coker, Quentin Jackson, Benny Powell - trombone
Juan Tizol - valve trombone
Jimmy Hamilton - clarinet, tenor saxophone
Johnny Hodges - alto saxophone
Russell Procope, Marshal Royal - alto saxophone, clarinet
Frank Wess - alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, flute
Paul Gonsalves, Frank Foster, Budd Johnson - tenor saxophone
Harry Carney, Charlie Fowlkes - baritone saxophone
Freddie Green - guitar
Aaron Bell, Eddie Jones - bass
Sam Woodyard, Sonny Payne - drums
This tune is a composition (and, one assumes, arrangement) by trumpeter Thad Jones, who was shortly to start his own big band with drummer Mel Lewis...
...and, of genetic interest, he was the younger brother of pianist Hank Jones, and the older brother of drummer Elvin Jones.

AWW! Y'all are missing out on the Basie Band's best performance of this (this ain't it, sorry)!!! It was a summer breeze coming up the fjord during the cold war, 1959 in Sweden. Recording can be obtained as The Complete Roulette Live Recordings of Count Basie and His Orchestra 1959-1962. Mosaic Records. It's also the best Basie album a Basie fan can get. Six CDs with quite a bit of Thad Jones and some Joe Williams. Recordings from Birdland too, with awesome audience participation!
