Sea Song
Dune Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sea Song
You look different every time
You come from the foam, crested brine
It's your skin shining softly in the moonlight
Partly fish, partly porpoise
Partly baby sperm whale
Am I yours? Are you mine to play with?
Joking apart, when you're drunk
You're terrific when you're drunk
I like you mostly late at night, you're quite alright
But I can't understand the different you in the morning
When it's time to play a being human for a while
We smile, we smile, we smile
You'll be different in the spring, I know
You're a seasonal beast

Like the starfish that drift in with the tide, with the tide
So until your blood runs to meet the next full moon
Your madness fits in nicely with my own, with my own
Your lunacy fits neatly with my own

My very own
We're not alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dune's song "Sea Song" are about a mermaid and how she is perceived by the singer. The opening lines describe how she looks different every time she appears, having come from the foam, crested brine. The chorus focuses on her half-human, half-fish nature - being partly fish, partly porpoise, and partly baby sperm whale. The singer is left questioning if he or she belongs to the mermaid or if they belong to him or her.

The second verse describes how the singer enjoys spending time with the mermaid when she is drunk because she is terrific. However, he or she cannot understand the different side of her in the morning when it's time to act like a human being. The chorus reiterates that the mermaid is a seasonal beast, like a starfish that drifts in with the tide.

The bridge explains how the madness of the mermaid fits in nicely with the singer's own madness. They are not alone in their craziness, and they belong together. Overall, the song is about the complexity of relationships and accepting people for who they are, even if they are different.
