A Song for You
Dusty Springfield Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been so many places
In my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I made some bad rhymes

I've acted out my life in stages
Ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now
I'm singing this song for you

I know your image of me
Is what I hope to be
I treated you unkindly
But, darling, can't you see
There's no one more important to me?
Oh, baby, can't you, please, see through me?
'Cause we're alone now, and
I'm singing this song for you

You taught me precious secrets
Of the truth, withholding nothing
You came out in front, I was hiding
Oh, but now I'm so much better
If the words don't come together
Just listen to the melody
'Cause my love's in there hiding
Oh, oh

Oh, I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
Love you for my life
You are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and
I was singing this song for you
We were alone
I was singing this song for you, oh
Singing
I was singing, singing, singing, singing, singing this song for you

Oh, yes
Singing this song for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dusty Springfield's "A Song For You" are a heart-wrenching tribute to an important person in the singer's life. In the first verse, she reflects on her career, acknowledging that she's been in many places and sung many songs, but also recognizes that she's made mistakes along the way. Despite this, she's now alone with this person, and she's singing this song for them.

In the second verse, Dusty addresses this person directly, recognizing that they have an image of her that she wants to live up to. She admits to treating them poorly in the past but emphasizes that they are the most important person in her life. The bridge recalls a time when this person taught her "precious secrets of the truth" and helped her come out of hiding. Even if she can't find the words to express herself, the melody itself expresses her love.

The final verse expresses her undying love for this person, adding that they are a friend for life. When her life is over, she wants this person to remember the time they spent together, as they were alone but connected through the power of song.

Overall, "A Song For You" is a deeply emotional love song that showcases both Dusty Springfield's vocal prowess and her songwriting abilities.

Dusty was truly a British National Treasure...now she belongs to the entire world. Thank you Dusty, for the beauty of your voice, soul, and artistry. From an American kid of the sixties.

I got the chills ~~

We can hear how she Dustified it.  She didn't think this would ever be released as it was initially shelved, right?  Dusty would have re-recorded bits of this to perfect it I think.  It's still wonderful to hear her demo, her soulful take on this song.   Don't think she would have approved of the release of this due to her having the highest of recording standards.  It's still great.

@b.bailey8244

yes, @Lori Romano - it was interesting to hear the pet shop boys saying she literally recorded each WORD separately! those were some high standards.

@jasonchace494

@B. Bailey that's the legend of Dusty, but she recorded it in bits and pieces, not one word at a time (nothing has been proved)
